An overview of this role
As the Engineering Manager for the Editor Extensions team at GitLab, you'll lead a talented group of engineers dedicated to bringing GitLab's powerful features directly into developers' preferred coding environments. You'll guide your team in building and maintaining extensions for popular IDEs and editors like VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio, and Neovim, ensuring seamless integration with GitLab's collaboration tools and GitLab Duo AI capabilities. In this role, you'll balance technical leadership with people management, helping your team deliver high-quality extensions while supporting their professional growth. You'll collaborate with other engineering teams, product managers, and UX designers to create intuitive developer experiences that boost productivity across multiple platforms while leveraging cutting-edge AI technology.

What You’ll Do
- Lead and manage a team of engineers building extensions for multiple editor platforms
- Drive the technical roadmap for Editor Extensions in collaboration with product management
- Ensure cross-version compatibility between extensions and different GitLab instance versions
- Foster collaboration with the Gitlab Extensions Protocols & AIGW (AI Gateway) teams
- Establish best practices for extension development across multiple platforms
- Mentor and guide engineers to grow their technical and professional skills
- Prioritize team workload and help remove obstacles to team progress
- Represent the team in cross-functional discussions and planning sessions
- Analyze user feedback and metrics to drive continuous improvement of extensions
- Manage team member capacity effectively to achieve team goals and deliver value to users
What You’ll Bring
- Experience leading engineering teams building developer tools or IDE extensions
- Strong understanding of JavaScript/TypeScript development and some experience with Ruby
- Familiarity with extension development for at least one popular IDE (VS Code, JetBrains, etc.)
- Experience with REST API integration in frontend applications
- Background in managing cross-platform development projects
- Understanding of version compatibility management and its challenges
- Excellent people management and mentorship skills
- Strong communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience with Git workflows and GitLab features (nice to have)
