An overview of this role
As a Principal Product Manager in GitLab’s Security and Compliance section, you will be a senior product leader focused on driving growth and value realization across the Security and Compliance portfolio, particularly as it contributes to GitLab Ultimate.
You will partner closely with the VP of Product for Security and Compliance and work horizontally with product managers, UX, engineering, and go-to-market teams to align independently owned initiatives into coherent customer workflows and clear portfolio priorities. Rather than owning a single feature area, you will operate at a portfolio level, connecting work across teams, identifying gaps and opportunities, and helping ensure that product investments translate into measurable customer and business impact.
You will bring deep application security expertise to shape strategy in areas that lack clear ownership, including turning internal security capabilities and research into customer-facing products, identifying and validating emerging security use cases, and helping guide new ideas from early exploration to product-market fit. You will also help strengthen product-led partnerships with external vendors where they meaningfully expand customer value.
A core part of this role is elevating product decision quality across the team. You will coach and review PM work on areas that materially impact portfolio outcomes, helping sharpen problem framing, product requirements, go-to-market thinking, and escalation handling. You will use AI-native workflows, including tools like GitLab Duo and lightweight prototyping, to accelerate discovery, validation, and communication from concept to concrete outcomes.
Examples of the kinds of initiatives you’ll influence:
- Turning internal security tools, practices, and research into differentiated, customer-facing capabilities within GitLab’s DevSecOps platform
- Creating a repeatable path from early innovation ideas in Security and Compliance to validated products ready for broader investment and scale
What you’ll do
- Lead product strategy across the Security and Compliance portfolio, with a focus on application security testing as a whole, to drive cohesive roadmaps and measurable growth in adoption and customer value.
- Own end-to-end definition and delivery for high-impact initiatives such as packaging internal security capabilities for customers, strengthening vulnerability research, and incubating emerging products from ideation to product-market fit. Ensure clear success criteria, on-time delivery, and demonstrable impact on customer security outcomes and product adoption.
- Partner closely with Product Managers in scanners to mentor, coach, and review their product work, including product requirement documents, roadmap decisions, and go-to-market thinking, to elevate the quality and consistency of product execution and improve the success of launches.
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners in engineering, design, partnerships, and go-to-market teams to shape positioning, launch plans, and strategic collaborations that expand the Security and Compliance business through increased adoption and engagement.
- Drive a clear strategy for vulnerability research and security partnerships, working with internal and external stakeholders to identify opportunities and translate them into product outcomes that measurably improve product quality, coverage, and differentiation.
- Use AI-first tools and workflows to quickly explore ideas, create prototypes, and communicate concepts. Increase the speed and quality of product discovery and decision-making by tracking improvements in cycle time and validation effectiveness.
- Build strong relationships across GitLab to influence without direct authority, connect work across teams, and help resolve complex escalations in a constructive, transparent way that reduces blockers and improves resolution time and stakeholder satisfaction.
What you’ll bring
- Product management experience in application security or related security domains, with a track record of owning products from strategy through execution.
- Background working across multiple security product areas or portfolios, not just a single feature, including exposure to topics like code scanning, dependency scanning, and security testing.
- Experience operating at a broad, cross-functional scope, partnering closely with go-to-market, marketing, partnerships, and internal security teams to shape positioning and drive adoption.
- Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and elevate other product managers, including reviewing product requirements and supporting them through escalations and go to market decisions.
- Comfort acting as a right-hand partner to senior leadership, translating high-level business goals into clear product priorities and helping connect strategy across a portfolio.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with an interest in doing the legwork to build trust and influence without authority.
- Hands-on, AI-first mindset using modern tools to prototype, visualize ideas, and communicate product concepts quickly, for example, by spinning up lightweight demos or UI drafts.
- Openness to candidates from adjacent domains who bring deep product expertise, transferable security experience, and an interest in growing further into application security and DevSecOps.
About the team
The Security and Compliance product team owns a broad portfolio of security and compliance capabilities within GitLab's DevSecOps platform, including application security scanners (code scanning, software composition analysis, and dependency scanning), secret detection, authorization, authentication, and other security features. The team is also expanding into vulnerability research, internal security productization, innovation incubation, and strategic partnerships. You'll join a distributed team of product managers who report to the VP of Product for Security and Compliance. You'll collaborate closely with engineering, design, go-to-market, and partnerships teams across time zones in an asynchronous, documentation-first way. Our focus is on elevating how we build and ship security capabilities within GitLab, improving how we coach and develop product managers in the section, and exploring new opportunities to turn internal security expertise and emerging ideas into products with strong market fit.
