General Description of the Programme:

GOAL has worked in Syria since 2012, delivering food security and nutrition assistance, supporting access to clean piped water, and providing emergency relief and shelter improvements for conflict-affected host and displaced communities in urban, rural and camp settings. With several offices in Idleb Governorate and Northern Aleppo, GOAL currently reaches nearly 1 million people with humanitarian assistance across Northwest Syria.

In addition to more than 500 field-based staff members who deliver aid and support inside Syria, a team of around 100 national and international personnel manage GOAL Syria’s programmes from offices in Türkiye and Jordan, with technical and administrative guidance from GOAL’s Head Office and global advisors.

Job purpose:

The GOAL Syria Senior Field Media Officer is the process owner for the entire range of visual and audio-visual content that is developed in association with GOAL’s programmatic and operational activities in Idleb and Aleppo. The role is primarily responsible for planning, producing, categorizing, editing, and archiving documentary and narrative media material under the line management of the Deputy Field Communications and Media Manager, the overall supervision of the Field Programmes Coordinator, and the technical direction of the Türkiye-based Communications and Media Manager.    

The Senior Field Media Officer also contributes to the production of other content packages – including case studies, success stories, web articles, and social media postings – that are targeted at defined audiences by regularly developing and editing media material. In this capacity, the role holder will work closely with the Deputy Field Communications and Media Manager in the provision of technical oversight to the Field Media Officer based in Idleb and, further, will be responsible for designing and carrying out visual and audio-visual documentation training activities for various GOAL Syria departments.

Duties, objectives and competencies

Media (50%) 

  • Manage and carry out the acquisition of visual and audio-visual material in the field, including by creating and following media production schedules in line with content development plans, as advised by the Communications and Media Manager.   
  • Create high-quality, publication-targeted photography collections and video segments featuring GOAL Syria’s programmatic activities in accordance with specific public information and fundraising campaign briefs or in response to requests by the Field Programmes Coordinator.
  • Develop, plan, record, and edit written and audio-visual interviews with communities, beneficiaries, and staff members.
  • Draft field-sourced stories in association with defined content collection plans as well as independently developing new storylines.
  • Establish and manage a system of offline/online media storage and retrieval, and keep archives of content and associated data secure, accessible, and up to date.

Documentation (20%) 

  • Regularly produce, collate, categorize, and archive visual and audio-visual recordings of GOAL Syria programme activities and operations.

Oversee and support the visual and audio-visual documentation of GOAL Syria programme activities and operations by various field teams and establish a system of inter-departmental documentation coordination.   

Coordination (20%) 

  • Work with the Media Officer to provide coaching and technical supervision in the production and editing of written narrative content and photography.

Training (10%)

  • Prepare and deliver training in advanced audio-visual production and post-production techniques for other members of the GOAL Syria Communications and Media Department.   
  • Develop and execute a training plan for GOAL Syria’s Programme, Programme Quality, and Systems teams on visual and audio-visual documentation and information collection in the field. 

Requirements (essential)

  • University education in a communications or media discipline, or university education in another discipline and documented, substantive formal training in visual and audio-visual production.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a similar, communications and/or media related role.
  • Proficiency in narrative content development and storytelling, including in scripting short-form video. 
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in photography, videography (including post-production), and sound recording and editing.
  • Journalistic and media writing skills, including the ability to plan and conduct interviews.  
  • Advanced technological skills, including in the installation and operation of media hardware and software and offline/online content filing and data management systems.
  • Intermediate written and spoken English language skills.
  • Advanced skills in written and spoken Arabic.

Requirements (desired)

  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • Experience or skills in design for print or multimedia.
  • Motion graphic design skills.
  • Experience in developing and conducting training on visual and audio-visual media production and documentation techniques.
