Freelance Art Director

New York Office; Santa Monica, CA (Corp HQ)

About The Company

goop is a lifestyle platform dedicated to exploration, curation, and groundbreaking conversation. From its award-winning beauty and fashion lines to its expansive editorial lens, goop invites women to embrace the process of becoming, and to discover deep joy in the pursuit of pleasure, beauty, and growth in all phases of life.

Gwyneth Paltrow began goop in the fall of 2008 as a weekly newsletter. It has expanded into a beauty, fashion, and food business that’s also known for its products, curation, podcast, TV shows, live events, and retail stores.

Culturally, results are the common language here — clear goals, clear numbers, a visible line from contribution to outcome. AI is native to the way the team works, in every function, which raises the bar on what a small group can accomplish. Authority sits with the work: your scope is defined, and inside it you have real decision rights that we expect you to use. Founder mode is not a phase we are in; it is how the company is built.

About You

You’re an art director with a background in luxury brands, and you can take a campaign from first idea to final file. You come up with the concept, you’re on set making the calls, and you stay with the edit until every asset meets a luxury standard. You specialize in either premium-to-luxury skincare and beauty or luxury fashion, and your portfolio shows it. You know how to make a product feel elevated and desirable: through restraint, texture, light, and a quiet confidence that never feels mass-market. You think beyond the hero image, so one shoot produces enough content to carry every channel until the next launch. You have a sharp eye for typography, pacing, and detail. You give clear, specific notes on video and can tell an editor exactly where to cut, what to trim, and which frame to hold on.

About The Role

goop is building a roster of freelance Art Directors to lead creative on 2027 launches for goop Beauty and GWYN, our fashion line. Projects are assigned by category, so beauty specialists lead beauty launches and fashion specialists lead GWYN collections. On each project, you own the creative from start to finish. That means concepting, executing on set, and managing post-production through to a final toolkit of approved assets that every channel uses until the next launch. Every touchpoint should carry the polish and sensibility of a luxury brand.

Category Focus

Beauty: Premium-to-luxury skincare and beauty launches. This includes the hero campaign film and imagery, the founder story, proof and results, how-to and tutorial content, and sensorial texture and product education that make the formulas feel indulgent and worth the investment. You also lead evergreen capture of hero products: texture macros, application and ritual videos, ingredient hero shots, and routine pairings, all held to the visual standard of prestige skincare.

Fashion (GWYN): Seasonal collections, including campaign and lookbook imagery, GP wearing GWYN, on-figure and flat-lay/ghost, detail and fabric close-ups that show the craftsmanship, runway and BTS video, and styling and fit content. You also create assets for presentations, trunk shows, and activations.

Responsibilities include:

Concept & Pre-Production

  • Develop elevated campaign concepts, moodboards, and visual direction for each launch
  • Map every needed asset before the shoot, across social, paid, PDP, Amazon, wholesale, retail, and event signage
  • Build shot lists that cover the full set of baseline content for the category
  • Plan for the special crops and versions needed for tentpoles and other initiatives

On-Set Execution

  • Art direct photo and video shoots on set, holding every frame to a luxury standard
  • Work with photographers, videographers, stylists, and talent to capture the concept and complete the full shot list

Post-Production Management

  • Manage post-production through final delivery, including edit, retouch, color, and resizing
  • Write clear, detailed edit notes on video cuts: where to cut and clip, pacing, frame selection, and versions for each platform
  • Own typography and on-screen text across video and static assets
  • Deliver a final toolkit, with links to every approved asset, for channel owners to use

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work with brand, marketing, social, e-commerce, and retail teams so every channel pulls from one approved source
  • Use final legal-approved copy and claims across all assets
  • Keep each project on schedule against the 2027 launch calendar

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience: Proven art direction experience at luxury or prestige brands across concept, production, and post. You need a clear specialty in either premium-to-luxury skincare and beauty or luxury fashion
  • Luxury Sensibility: A trained eye for what makes a brand feel luxurious, including composition, lighting, texture, and restraint, and experience bringing that to both campaign and everyday content
  • Portfolio: Campaign work in your category for premium or luxury brands, taken from concept to final assets and including both video and stills
  • Post-Production: Hands-on knowledge of video editing workflows and the ability to give precise, actionable edit notes
  • Typography & Design: Strong typography and layout skills, and fluency in Figma and the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Skills: Highly organized, able to manage several projects at once, and calm and decisive on set
  • Tools: Figma and AI platforms are both required

FAQ

  • Engagement: This is a freelance, project-based contractor role. Projects are assigned by category (beauty or fashion).
  • Compensation: Project-based fee, determined by the scope of each project.
