The Actuarial Specialist is responsible for leading the build, creation, and implementation of pricing models, reserving models, and other actuarial or predictive analytics as an independent contributor. The individual may work alongside other less experienced analysts or co-op students. This role reports to the Actuarial Manager and works in conjunction with less experienced analysts. The Actuarial Specialist will provide additional support to any Actuarial Analysts that require assistance
What will you do?
Data Literacy
- The Actuarial Specialist is responsible for understanding what the data means and possesses the ability to “clean” it as required with minimal assistance. The individual is regarded as a go-to resource by other members of the team.
Model Building
- The Actuarial Specialist is responsible for building statistical models for many problems and fully understands the“bigger picture”.
- The role will work with the management team to incorporate business considerations into his or her technical model for implementation purposes
Implementation Support
- The Actuarial Specialist can provide support to less experienced analysts regarding implementation requirements such as excel rater creation or maintenance, renewal lists, impact studies, etc. as required without assistance
Personal Development
- The Actuarial Specialist will make serious attempts at progressing through any unfinished CAS exams. The Actuarial Specialist will also perform other, project-specific required research and provide technical suggestions and training to the team.
Coaching
- Provide appropriate daily support to the team members and coach them through their growth from Actuarial Analyst to Senior Actuarial Analyst (and beyond!)
What will you need to succeed in this role?
- Undergraduate degree in Actuarial Science or Mathematics/Statistics with FCAS / FCIA or (near) ACAS designation.
- 5-8 years of experience as a Actuarial specialist with another P&C insurer.
- 5-8 years of applicable experience at a life insurance company
- 5-8 years of experience in Data Science roles
- Proficient in working with complex datasets
- Eager to learn and grow professionally
- Understands the “big picture” and business context
- Communicates findings clearly to support team and organizational goals
- Shares insights effectively across teams and functions
- Collaborates with business partners such as Product, Underwriting, and Finance
- Coaches junior and intermediate analysts and contributes to team development, including peer and senior collaboration
- Analytical Skills: Strong ability to analyze data and metrics to drive improvements.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with internal and external stakeholders.
