The Opportunity
Superhuman is on a mission to build the fastest, most delightful productivity experiences powered by AI. As we scale rapidly, our internal technology operations must evolve to match our ambition.
This is a unique opportunity to shape the evolution of the infrastructure, moving us from a single-product company to a multi-product platform. This transformation creates a hard technical problem: how do you ensure that identity, privacy, and responsible AI work seamlessly across products built from the ground up, each with its own architecture, user model, and compliance stack?
We're looking for a Director of Engineering to lead our Identity, Privacy, Responsible AI (RAI), and Shared Services teams in North America. This person will own the cross-cutting platform capabilities on which every Superhuman product depends—unified identity and access management, privacy-preserving data practices, responsible AI governance, and shared infrastructure services that tie it all together.
This is not a role where you maintain the status quo. You will drive strategy and execution to unify identity systems on a single platform, extend privacy and RAI practices to new product surfaces and AI capabilities, and ensure shared services scale without requiring every product team to solve the same problems independently.
You will report to the Head of Infrastructure and serve as a key partner to the product, legal, security, and engineering leadership across the organization.
In this role, you will:
Lead and develop multiple engineering teams. You will manage Engineering Managers who lead the Identity, Privacy/RAI, and Shared Services teams. You'll set the bar for engineering excellence, coach your managers, and build a culture of ownership and accountability.
Own the strategy for unified identity across all Superhuman products. You will drive the technical vision and execution for a single identity platform that supports SSO, SCIM, user lifecycle management, and cross-product account unification across Grammarly, Coda, Superhuman Mail, and Go. This includes ensuring users have a single login, a single account, and a consistent experience across products.
Scale privacy engineering and responsible AI as the product surface expands. Your team's own data de-identification, GDPR/privacy compliance, cookie management, privacy reviews for new features, AI safety testing, sensitivity filters, and impact assessments. As Superhuman launches new AI-powered capabilities, you will ensure that privacy and RAI practices keep pace without becoming a bottleneck to product velocity.
Drive shared services that other engineering teams can rely on. You will own the strategy for shared infrastructure services that abstract complexity and provide standardized, scalable solutions to common problems. The goal is a self-service model: product teams should be able to build on your platform without needing to understand the underlying infrastructure or reinvent foundational capabilities.
Set and execute strategic priorities. You will translate organizational goals into clear quarterly plans, manage dependencies across teams and business units, and make the tradeoffs required to ship on time. You will represent your teams in cross-functional planning and other company-wide initiatives. You will serve as the senior engineering leader for these domains in North America, operating with full autonomy on day-to-day decisions and escalating strategically. You should be comfortable representing your teams to executives, making prioritization calls, and driving resolution in ambiguous situations.
Qualifications:
Must have:
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 5 years in engineering leadership roles managing multiple teams (including managing managers).
- Strong understanding of privacy engineering and data protection - such as GDPR, data classification, de-identification, and privacy-by-design principles.
- Proven track record of leading cross-platform or cross-product engineering initiatives in a multi-product or post-acquisition environment.
- Experience building and operating shared platform services that other engineering teams depend on.
- Ability to translate ambiguous business requirements into concrete technical strategy and execution plans.
- Strong communication skills; you will represent your teams to executives, align stakeholders across business units, and create clarity in complex cross-functional situations.
Nice to have:
- Experience with identity and access management systems — SSO, OAuth, SCIM, user lifecycle, multi-tenant architectures. You've built or led teams that built these at scale.
- Experience with compliance certifications and working with GRC teams.
- Familiarity with responsible AI governance.
- Background in security engineering or a security-adjacent domain.
- Experience in a company that has gone through an acquisition or product integration.
