Machine Learning Engineer

As a Machine Learning Engineer in our Budapest office, formerly known as Gravity R&D, now serving as Taboola Budapest, our R&D hub for Central Europe, The team is responsible for conducting research and innovating in the field of machine learning and recommender systems to improve the performance of the product and extend its capabilities. This includes researching, developing, testing, maintaining, and operating the in-house deep learning-based recommender module. The deep learning module is separated from the core recommender system. Still, the two often work together to provide high-quality recommendations for our customers.

Occasionally, the team also provides machine learning-related expertise to other teams in the company.

To thrive in this role, you'll need:

  • At least intermediate knowledge of the Python programming language & common data science packages (e.g., numpy, pandas, etc.).
  • At least intermediate knowledge of pyTorch.
  • Stable knowledge of the theoretical and practical basics of machine learning.
  • Knowledge of the basics of deep learning.
  • Familiarity with algorithm theory and algorithm complexity.
  • Good written and oral English skills.
  • Proactive personality, can-do attitude and eager to learn new things.
  • MSc degree in computer science (or similar) with relevant studies in machine learning. MSc students in the last few months of their MSc studies are also encouraged to apply. In certain cases, exceptional candidates with BSc degree & relevant work experience might be considered as well.

Bonus points if you have:

  • Familiarity with one or more additional deep learning frameworks besides pyTorch.
  • At least beginner level knowledge of Java.
  • Knowledge of recommender systems and machine learning algorithms for recommendations.
  • Knowledge of A/B testing.
  • Familiarity with any of the following technologies: MySQL, ClickHouse, Kafka, Kubernetes.
  • Good written and oral Hungarian skills.

How you’ll make an impact:

As a Machine Learning Engineer, you’ll bring value by:

  • Developing and maintaining the framework that facilitates our deep learning
  • algorithms.
  • Integrating the framework with other systems (e.g. data pipeline of a customer).
  • Optimizing and deploying the deep learning algorithms for new customers.
  • Monitoring the performance and the health of the deployed module.
  • Executing A/B tests among various algorithms and configurations within the framework and comparing their performance.
  • Improving the existing algorithms by adding new features or speeding up execution.
  • Participating in (mostly applied) research tasks to expand the capabilities of the module.
  • Occasionally helping other teams of the company with machine learning-related tasks.

This position is mainly an engineering position with occasional research opportunities.

  • You’ll gain hands-on experience on how to secure a robust and efficient service in a real-time, high-load environment.
  • You’ll also learn about various machine learning models and what it takes to use these models in production in a cost-efficient way.
  • You’ll learn about how recommender systems and algorithms work and how these systems determine what the user is interested in based on his browsing behavior.
  • You’ll also have the chance to learn various technologies related to big data or deep learning and learn about online evaluation.
