Avionics Technician Lead

Summary

Provides day-to-day leadership and technical direction to Avionics Technicians supporting aircraft modification and completion programs. Coordinates daily work assignments, production priorities, and manpower while serving as the primary technical resource for the team. Works closely with Production Control, Engineering, Quality, Materials, and leadership to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in compliance with FAA regulations, customer requirements, engineering specifications, and company procedures. Performs hands-on avionics work as required to support production objectives.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate the daily activities of Avionics Technicians.
  • Assign work based on production priorities, manpower, technician skill level, and schedule requirements.
  • Monitor production progress and adjust work assignments to meet program milestones.
  • Serve as the primary technical resource for the production team.
  • Review production orders, engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, Bills of Material (BOMs), engineering orders, and work packages before work begins.
  • Partner with Production Control, Engineering, Quality and Materials to resolve issues and maintain production schedules.
  • Ensure work is performed in accordance with FAA regulations, customer requirements, engineering drawings, Standard Wiring Practices, and company procedures.
  • Perform aircraft electrical installations, modifications, wire harness fabrication, testing, troubleshooting, repairs, and system integration as required.
  • Verify production documentation, labor transactions, and production order status are completed accurately.
  • Oversee and co-sign work performed by uncertified mechanics in accordance with the GTI Repair Station Manual (RSM).
  • Facilitate On-the-Job Training (OJT) and mentor Technician III, Technician II, and Technician I employees.
  • Assist in developing standardized work practices and improving production efficiency.
  • Promote compliance with company safety policies, 5S, FOD prevention, ESD protection, and tool control.
  • Assist with technician evaluations by providing input on technical performance, productivity, and training needs.
  • Communicate production status, schedule risks, manpower constraints, and recovery plans to leadership.
  • Prepare routine production reports and correspondence.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Summary of Education, Experience & Certification

Minimum seven (7) years of aircraft avionics installation, electrical systems, or aircraft modification experience.Previous experience leading technicians, coordinating production activities, or serving as a technical lead preferred.

 

Employees working on programs subject to International Traffic in Arms Regulations must qualify as a US Person which is defined as a US Citizen, a Permanent Resident who does not work for a foreign company, foreign government, foreign governmental agency or organization, or a political asylee for legal compliance purposes.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of aircraft wire harness fabrication and installation techniques.
  • Ability to interpret engineering data and manufacturing documentation.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple priorities in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to mentor and develop technicians.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Thorough knowledge of Boeing Standard Wiring Practices Manual (SWPM) and Boeing Product Standards.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, wiring lists, engineering orders, maintenance manuals, installation drawings, and Bills of Material.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills involving aircraft electrical and avionics systems.
  • Ability to work independently and cross-functionally as part of an established and growing team.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time, use hands to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and have close/color vision ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to travel as required.
  • Ability to work outside of core business hours as required.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Able to comply with the DOT/FAA Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
  • Able to climb and work from step stools and ladders.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Able to reach overhead and work in confined aircraft spaces.
  • Able to work in stooping, kneeling, bending, crawling, or standing positions for extended periods.
  • Able to distinguish wire colors and perform precision work requiring normal or corrected vision.
  • Full range of motion of both hands with the ability to use hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Able to work in a non-dust-free manufacturing environment.
