D-Tools, Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

D-Tools, Inc.

Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

D-Tools

For nearly three decades, D-Tools has been the technology backbone of the audiovisual integration industry. Our software powers the proposals, system designs, and end-to-end workflows that AV integrators depend on to run profitable businesses. We are the established leader in this vertical SaaS market, with deep penetration across thousands of integration firms and a reputation built on our pioneering integration with AutoCAD and other industry-standard tools. Our integrated product library, with over 1.5 million products, is the industry’s most comprehensive data asset and a foundation for everything we build. Through our i3 program, we work closely with manufacturers to extend our value across the entire AV supply chain.

Today, we operate across an environment that includes a legacy enterprise platform and a modern cloud solution. Both are growing. We are actively pursuing acquisitions, building new services on top of our SaaS foundation, and investing aggressively in AI. D-Tools is already a leader in our niche. The opportunity now is to modernize and accelerate.

The Opportunity

AI is the defining inflection point for the software industry, and D-Tools intends to lead that transition in our market. This is a CTO role for a builder, not a maintainer. We have market position, customer trust, a deep data moat serving both integrators and manufacturers, and a proven product suite. What we need is a technology leader who can build on that foundation to drive the next phase of growth.

That means charting the modernization path for our legacy platform while accelerating our cloud solution. It means embedding AI into the products our customers use every day and fundamentally changing how we develop software. It means rethinking how Product, Design and Engineering work together to move from concept to production faster. And it means building engineering talent domestically and across our global teams.

This role reports to the CEO and partners closely with the Chief Product Officer. The CTO will be expected to operate with urgency, make pragmatic decisions, and drive measurable progress. If you do your best work turning complexity into clarity and building teams that ship, keep reading.

What You Will Own

  • End-to-end technology strategy, architecture, and execution across all D-Tools platforms, including architectural standards across applications, data, integrations, cloud infrastructure, and security, and stewardship of our product data infrastructure and i3 data insights program
  • A pragmatic roadmap to modernize our legacy platform while protecting and growing existing revenue streams, and to accelerate the capabilities of our cloud solution
  • The engineering operating model, including leadership of in-house teams (domestic, nearshore, and offshore) and management of third-party development partners
  • Engineering delivery: pace, quality, reliability, and accountability for outcomes
  • AI strategy and execution across two dimensions: embedding intelligent capabilities into customer-facing products, and driving adoption of AI-augmented development workflows to accelerate engineering velocity. Establish clear handoffs, shared tooling, and expectations for rapid prototyping across Product, Design, and Engineering that move cleanly from concept to production
  • Modernize QA and quality engineering by shifting from manual end-stage testing to automated quality checks built into CI/CD, embedding quality engineers with teams to define test strategy, build reusable automation, and raise release confidence without slowing delivery
  • Technical due diligence, evaluation, and integration planning for acquisitions as D-Tools actively pursues M&A to expand its platform and market reach
  • Building and developing engineering talent across all teams, with a focus on strengthening domestic technical leadership to complement our global workforce
  • Final technical authority on major platform investments, technology decisions, and new service development to expand our addressable market
  • Visibility and credibility with customers and the AV integration industry — attending CEDIA, InfoComm/AVIXA, and ISE events, engaging directly with large integrator customers, and representing D-Tools' technical vision externally

Who You Are

You have written code, designed systems, and led teams that shipped products customers depend on. You may not write production code today, but you can walk into an architecture review, spot the weak points, and redirect the team. Engineers respect you because you have done the work. Executives trust you because you make the complex simple.

Required

  • Prior experience as a CTO, VP of Engineering, or equivalent
  • Background in vertical SaaS, B2B software, or enterprise application platforms — ideally serving industries with complex workflows (construction, field service, manufacturing, or similar trades/integration verticals), with experience managing product data ecosystems, catalogs, APIs, or marketplace data infrastructure
  • Strong software engineering foundation with hands-on experience in architecture and system design, including modern cloud platforms (AWS or Azure), API design, DevOps practices, and CI/CD
  • Demonstrated success in modernizing or migrating platforms in complex, multi-product environments — managing the architectural tension between a revenue-generating legacy product and a growing modern platform, while increasing delivery speed without disrupting either
  • Hands-on experience with AI/ML — both shipping AI-powered features customers use and leveraging AI-augmented development tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar) to change how engineering teams work
  • Experience leading distributed engineering teams across geographies and cultures, including direct management of in-house offshore teams
  • Clear, direct communicator who can translate technical complexity into plain language for executives, product leaders, customers, and board-level audiences

Preferred

  • Experience in PE-backed, acquisition-driven, or high-growth environments
  • Direct experience with M&A technology integration, including platform consolidation and technical due diligence

What Drives You

Beyond experience, we care about character. Three principles define the culture we are building:

Passion. You care deeply about building great software and the impact it has on real customers. That energy is contagious.

Humility. You listen before you prescribe. You give credit freely and own it when things go sideways. No room for egos.

Curiosity. You ask why before you ask how. You are drawn to problems you haven’t solved before, and you push the people around you to think bigger.

Location

Preference for candidates in or willing to relocate to Atlanta, Charlotte, or a location in the Eastern Time Zone. D-Tools operates with a distributed workforce, and this role involves regular collaboration across U.S. and international time zones. Periodic travel to mostly domestic industry events is expected.

Compensation

Competitive base + performance bonus + equity participation
