Fleet Safety Manager
Fleet Safety Manager
Ground Logistics is a last-mile package delivery contractor with FedEx serving Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and West Virginia — built on a relentless commitment to safety and customer service.
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Fleet Safety Manager to lead our company-wide safety program. This is a newly created, standalone role reporting directly to senior leadership. The Fleet Safety Manager will be the single point of accountability for driver safety, DOT compliance, accident prevention, and safety culture across all four states of operation.
This position is ideal for a safety professional with a strong background in commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operations who thrives on building programs from the ground up, coaching drivers, and using data to drive measurable results.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Program Management
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve a comprehensive fleet safety program aligned with DOT, FMCSA, and FedEx requirements.
- Establish and maintain safety policies, standard operating procedures, and a company safety handbook.
- Conduct regular safety audits of vehicles and driver behaviors across MD, DE, VA, and WV.
- Manage the company's Safety Management System (SMS) and maintain all required safety records.
Accident Prevention & Investigation
- Lead all accident and incident investigations; identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Analyze accident and near-miss data to identify trends and deploy targeted prevention strategies.
- Maintain and report accident metrics (frequency, severity, cost) to senior leadership on a regular cadence.
Driver Training & Coaching
- Design and deliver new-hire safety orientation and ongoing driver safety training programs.
- Monitor telematics, dashcam footage, and driver scorecards to identify at-risk behaviors; conduct one-on-one coaching sessions.
- Administer progressive safety coaching and disciplinary procedures in partnership with HR.
- Champion a positive, blame-free safety culture that encourages reporting of hazards and near-misses.
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with FMCSA Hours of Service (HOS), drug & alcohol testing (DOT Part 40), driver qualification file requirements, and vehicle inspection regulations.
- Oversee pre-trip/post-trip vehicle inspection processes and ensure defects are documented and resolved promptly.
- Stay current on changes to federal and state transportation safety regulations affecting MD, DE, VA, and WV operations.
Reporting & Administration
- Prepare and present monthly safety performance reports to leadership, including KPIs such as preventable accident rate, miles-per-incident, and training completion rates.
- Maintain OSHA logs and any required FedEx safety reporting.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum 3–5 years of safety management experience in a trucking, last-mile delivery, or commercial transportation environment.
- Working knowledge of FMCSA regulations, DOT compliance, and Hours of Service rules.
- Demonstrated experience conducting accident investigations and root-cause analysis.
- Experience designing and delivering driver safety training programs.
- Proficiency with dashcam and telematics systems and driver scorecards.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable presenting to leadership and frontline staff alike.
- Ability to travel within Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and West Virginia as needed (estimated 30% travel).
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, Transportation Management, or a related field — OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certified Director of Safety (CDS) or Certified Transportation Safety Professional (CTSP) designation, or willingness to obtain within 12 months.
- Prior experience as a FedEx, UPS, Amazon DSP, or similar last-mile carrier employee.
- Familiarity with FedEx safety standards and protocols.
