You will be a key member of Guideline’s Legal and Compliance team, which is composed of creative and collaborative compliance professionals and attorneys. This team serves as a strategic advisor to Guideline’s business units, ensuring products and services are developed in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, managing risk, monitoring plan operational compliance, and facilitating solutions to complex legal and regulatory issues. Guideline is seeking a Corporate Counsel, IRS/Retirement to support our Legal and Compliance team.
What will you be working on?
We are looking for an experienced and collaborative attorney to serve as Corporate Counsel, IRS/Retirement. In this role, you will work closely with the Associate General Counsel in a dynamic and energetic start-up environment. The role will focus primarily on Internal Revenue Code compliance for IRAs and 401(k)s.

We are looking for an experienced and collaborative attorney to serve as Corporate Counsel, IRS/Retirement. In this role, you will work closely with the Associate General Counsel in a dynamic and energetic start-up environment. The role will focus primarily on Internal Revenue Code compliance for IRAs and 401(k)s.
Our ideal candidate is experienced in the retirement plan space. You have a strong background in IRAs and 401(k) plans and can advise and strategize on tax issues as well as general day to day administrative issues. You are a collaborative self-starter who is hands-on and willing to learn new technology in a fast-paced environment.
Job duties include:
- Manage the internal ERISA compliance question queue (mostly from CRMs and other client-facing internal partners)
- Develop, review, and implement internal training in collaboration with other teams
- Work with internal clients to ensure IRA and 401(k) record keeping functions are done correctly (e.g., 1099-R reporting, withholding and other tax question, beneficiary claims)
- Work as a collaborative team member/ L&C representative on special projects
- Problem-solve plan design issues and corrections, draft custom plan amendments as needed
- Draft, edit and review customer facing content that explains complex concepts accurately, clearly, and concisely
- Exhibit strong knowledge of defined contribution plan administration and compliance requirements to support internal organization goals
- Use analytical tools and industry publications to gather information and to think independently and proactively about how to best approach issues

Required Qualifications
- A J.D. from an accredited law school;
- 7+ years experience in 401(k) plans and IRAs (experience with a variety of DC plans including 403(b), 457, etc. a plus);
- Demonstrated knowledge of IRS and ERISA regulations and requirements;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to distill complex subject matters into terms readily understood by team members of all levels of expertise;
- Proven ability to work well independently, as part of team, and cross-functionally;
- Exceptional organizational and analytical skills;
- Ability to think strategically; and
- Collaborative, positive, and pragmatic.

- The base salary range for this position is $186,500-$201,500 annually.
- Metro
- The base salary range for this position is $176,000-$191,000 annually.
- National
- The base salary range for this position is $165,000-$180,000 annually.
