Atmospheric Modeling and Loads Engineer
Summary
Gulf Wind Technology is seeking an Atmospheric Modeling and Loads Engineer to join our engineering team in Hickory, North Carolina. To help our team grow and take on new projects, we’re looking for engineers who are excited to tackle new and innovative wind energy technology projects. Specifically, the Atmospheric Modeling and Loads Engineer will lead the integration of multi-scale atmospheric models with turbine and farm level system models.
Job description
As a member of Gulf Wind Technology’s Engineering Team, the Atmospheric Modeling and Loads Engineer will play a key role in the generation of inflow conditions and models for our design and analysis products. You will have a variety of opportunities to learn new skills while leading projects for customers, leaning into your own expertise to help the team succeed. At Gulf Wind Technology you will be responsible for:
- Developing multi-scale models to characterize atmospheric flow conditions of complex phenomena such as tropical storms, hurricanes, and low-level jets.
- Translating multi-scale atmospheric simulations into formats for use in turbine and farm level wind energy system simulations.
- Performing multibody simulations for wind turbine blades and systems, using internal and commercial software packages.
- Building new engineering tools, methods, codes, and scripts that improve the accuracy, capability, and speed of deliverables.
- Managing cross functional projects, cradle to grave, including developing a business case, coordinating team member activities, managing project budgets and customer reporting.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, atmospheric science, or a related field.
- Knowledge or experience of atmospheric modeling tools and methods, such as WRF, AMR-Wind, and LES.
- A humble approach to your own knowledge and skillsets. We value team members who willingly share their expertise with the team, but also take ownership of their learning and development plans.
- An engaged and committed team member, who is equally excited to facilitate a meeting or discussion, partner one on one with cross-functional team members or work collaboratively to achieve the team goals.
Desired characteristics
- Previous relevant experience, preferably in the wind industry, but candidates with translatable experience are encouraged to apply.
- Knowledge or experience of loads modeling processes and tools, such as OpenFAST, Bladed, Flex, Adams, or similar tools.
