Summary

Gulf Wind Technology is seeking a Conceptual Design Engineer to join our engineering team in Hickory, North Carolina. To help our team grow and take on new projects, we’re looking for engineers who are excited to tackle new and innovative wind energy technology projects. Specifically, the Conceptual Design Engineer will play a key role in developing new wind turbine blades and helping to validate the value of innovative technology concepts. 

Job description

As a member of Gulf Wind Technology’s Research and Development Team, the Conceptual Design Engineer will play a key role in the aeroelastic design and analysis of new and existing wind turbine blades. You will have a variety of opportunities to learn new skills while leading projects for customers, leaning into your own expertise to help the team succeed. At Gulf Wind Technology you will be responsible for: 

  • Leading the multi-disciplinary, multi-variable design space optimization of new blades, with a particular emphasis on incorporating new and innovative aerodynamic, structural, acoustic, and manufacturing technology. 
  • Performing engineering simulations for wind turbine blades and systems, using internal and commercial software packages. 
  • Building new engineering tools, methods, codes, and scripts that improve the accuracy, capability, and speed of deliverables. 
  • Managing cross functional projects, cradle to grave, including developing a business case, coordinating team member activities, managing project budgets and customer reporting. 
  • Travel to customer sites (wind energy projects, manufacturing facilities, etc.) and participate in turbine and blade assessments, including working at height. 

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, or aerospace engineering, or a related field.
  • Knowledge or experience of aerodynamic, structural, or loads modeling tools, such as BEM methods, BECAS, VABS, OpenFAST, Bladed, Flex, Adams or similar tools. 
  • A humble approach to your own knowledge and skillsets. We value team members who willingly share their expertise with the team, but also take ownership of their learning and development plans. 
  • An engaged and committed team member, who is equally excited to facilitate a meeting or discussion, partner one on one with cross-functional team members or work collaboratively to achieve the team goals. 

Desired characteristics

  • Previous relevant experience, preferably in the wind industry, but candidates with translatable experience are encouraged to apply. 
  • Knowledge or experience with composite manufacturing methods, analysis, or design methods.
