About the Role:

As a Senior Staff Engineer on the Gusto Pro team, you will drive technical strategy and execution for features that empower accounting firms to serve their clients more effectively. You’ll bring deep expertise and thought leadership in engineering excellence, influencing the team’s approach to solving complex challenges. Beyond delivering impactful projects, you’ll model and promote a culture of innovation, mentorship, and collaboration, helping the team grow and achieve exceptional results.

About the Team:

The Gusto Pro team creates tools tailored to accountants, with a mission to help them serve their clients efficiently and effectively. You’ll join a team of customer-obsessed engineers, designers, and product managers working to deliver features that streamline workflows, enhance user experiences, and improve Gusto Pro's scalability. We prioritize impact and measure accordingly to create tight feedback loops on which to iterate.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Identify and solve high-impact problems involving a level of technical and/or organization complexity that requires understanding and coordination across multiple domains.
  • Consistently show up as an organizational leader, within the Gusto Pro group and beyond.
  • Work with engineers and leaders across team and organizational boundaries to elevate Gusto’s engineering quality and velocity.
  • Inform and maintain best practices for reliability and observability for the Gusto Pro group.
  • Communicate and negotiate the organizational investment for the creation or expansion of the Gusto Pro group’s systems and services.
  • Lead engineering-wide improvements to core data models and other foundational architecture.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • Deep expertise in building maintainable systems at scale.
  • Experience providing technical leadership, including influencing architecture and design decisions for complex applications.
  • A track record of delivering high-quality software in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Expertise in applying engineering best practices, such as code quality, testing strategies, and performance optimization.
  • Proven ability to mentor engineers and foster technical growth within a team.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to share knowledge and align teams on technical goals.
  • Experience in SaaS, fintech, or similar industries is a plus.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $191,000/yr to $237,000/yr in Denver & most remote locations, and $225,000/yr to $279,000/yr for San Francisco, Seattle, & New York. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.


Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas. 

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required.
