About the Role:

The Reporting Platform team at Gusto empowers business owners to make better decisions with data and insights through reports and visualizations that span our product lines. The Platform organization at Gusto is in its early stages of building foundational components that can be reused consistently across our product lines. This is an exciting opportunity for engineers passionate about platform engineering and data at scale. As a Senior Staff Engineer on the Platform Reporting team, you will help drive our core reporting strategy and its execution across our suite of products. You will bring deep experience in building world-class experiences and systems, strong mentorship skills, and the ability to think holistically about the systems we own.   Our product stack is based off of Ruby on Rails and React for our frontend interfaces.   Our next generation reporting platform is built on top of Cube and ClickHouse.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Identify and solve high-impact problems involving technical and/or organizational complexity that requires understanding and coordination across multiple domains.
  • Consistently demonstrate organizational leadership within our core experience teams and beyond.
  • Work with engineers and others across team and organizational boundaries to elevate Gusto’s engineering quality and velocity.
  • Inform and maintain best practices for reliability and observability for the team.
  • Communicate and negotiate organizational investment for the creation or expansion of our systems and services.
  • Find, explore, and coordinate engineering-wide improvements to our core foundational architecture for reporting.
  • Identify the proper abstractions for our platform that allow other engineering teams to use our reporting services.

Here’s what we're looking for:

    • Effective Communicator: Members of our platform teams must be excellent communicators. You will set the stage for how we interact with other engineering teams and define our process touchpoints. You will be an engineering representative for our platform offerings.
    • A track record of learning: Technologies change over time. To succeed in this role, you must jump into unfamiliar areas and quickly develop expertise. We are looking for someone excited about becoming a reporting subject matter expert and who thrives on upleveling their organization through education.
    • If you have experience or interest in any of the following areas, we want to talk to you:

      • Platform Engineering
      • Reporting
