About the Role:

The Head of Engineering for CX Platform at Gusto will play a crucial leadership role in shaping the strategy and execution of the company's vision. Gusto blends product and service offerings, with a unique focus on combining human touch with technology to scale Payroll, Benefits, and HR services. This role involves building and scaling systems that enable thousands of customer support and operations teams to serve customers more effectively. The candidate will leverage AI and cutting-edge technologies to enhance one of Gusto’s core business areas, ensuring the platform supports the high-touch nature of Gusto's services. They will also play a cross-organizational leadership role, inspiring and collaborating with teams across the company to build and enhance platform capabilities.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Lead and manage platform product development with a focus on scalable architecture and data models.
  • Guide technical discussions, understanding and debating tradeoffs to build robust and scalable systems.
  • Inspire teams to adopt platform-first product strategies and capabilities.
  • Drive a systems-first approach to user experience, informed by customer empathy, research, data, and insights from customer support.
  • Manage highly distributed engineering teams and managers with at least 5 years of experience, and contribute to team growth with a minimum of 10 years of development experience.
  • Collaborate with both revenue-generating product teams and platform teams.
  • Provide strong product vision, creating and sharing a clear and inspiring roadmap, and work with teams to address dependencies, risks, and tradeoffs to enhance velocity.
  • Lead both backend platform development and front-end/design thinking, with experience in mobile or a mobile-focused organization a plus.
  • Motivate and inspire cross-functional teams including PMs, designers, engineers, data scientists, and other partners.
  • Foster excellent relationships across teams and ensure smooth collaboration with partner teams.
  • Elevate technical teams and scale their capabilities.
  • Build relationships across the organization, including app leads and executives, to increase understanding and adoption of platform capabilities, driving velocity.
  • Maintain a strategic vision for long-term goals and work towards aligning teams to achieve them as one organization.
  • Think strategically and build hands-on solutions, balancing global thinking with deep technical involvement to unblock teams and tackle challenges.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 10+ years working on high-growth digital experiences, with at least 4 of those years focused on platform features, ideally with product experience as well
  • Demonstrated experience scaling platform products end-to-end (architecture to UI), likely at companies like Shopify, Salesforce, Stripe, Square, etc. 
  • Ideal candidates will have seen a platform through a period of growth, transition, or change and will have proven methodologies and tangible examples of how they’ve driven adoption.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $222,000 to $256,000 in Denver & most major metro locations, and $261,000 to $299,000 for San Francisco, New York, & Seattle. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.


Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas. 

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required.
