About the Role:

We’re seeking passionate individuals eager to safeguard small business payrolls by proactively mitigating risk and investigating potential fraud, all while delivering an exceptional customer experience. As a member of our Risk Operations team, you will play a critical role in protecting Gusto from financial losses and ensuring that Gusto Embedded Payroll (GEP)  remains a secure, efficient, and user-friendly platform for our partners.

You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams, including risk, product, and engineering, to analyze feedback, drive process enhancements, and develop innovative, AI-driven solutions that fortify our partners' security and elevate their embedded experience. This role offers a unique opportunity to significantly impact the safety and efficacy of GEP, pioneering the future of secure payroll processing.

About the Team:

The Payments and Risk team at Gusto is dedicated to ensuring accurate, secure, and timely payments for over 400,000 businesses and their employees. This role supports GEP, our rapidly expanding business segment that empowers developers to integrate payroll solutions directly into their applications. GEP combines robust APIs, embeddable UI flows, and developer toolkits to deliver an innovative embedded payroll product. Operating as a startup within Gusto, GEP has its own dedicated resources while collaborating with the broader organization to deliver a cutting-edge platform at the intersection of fintech and labor.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Proactively Combat Fraud: Act as a key defender, leveraging tools and techniques, including AI-powered systems, to identify, investigate, and prevent fraudulent activities and system abuse.
  • Analyze Complex Challenges: Tackle intricate fraud and ACH risk challenges by developing and implementing innovative, data-driven strategies and AI-assisted methodologies to uncover trends, patterns, and malicious actors.
  • Enhance Cutting-Edge Technology: Blend established risk programs with AI to optimize fraud detection and prevention. Drive continuous improvements to our AI-driven systems and processes, ensuring scalability and future-proofing our operations against evolving threats. 
  • Collaborate with Stakeholders: Partner closely with internal teams, customers, and external partners to address risk-related issues and drive effective solutions.
  • Provide Expert Support: Serve as a subject matter expert, offering guidance and support to internal teams and customers, and managing complex escalations with precision.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • Experience: 3-4+ years of experience in operational work, fraud detection, and/or investigation. Bonus points for experience in the banking or payments industry.
  • Analytical Skills: Exceptional problem-solving abilities, a knack for structured, data-driven thinking, the ability to identify anomalies, and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Integrity: A strong moral compass, objective yet compassionate decision-making, and a commitment to ethical conduct.
  • Organization: Excellent time management and the ability to manage multiple projects/tasks effectively. Highly process and policy-oriented.
  • Drive: Goal-oriented, positive, and proactive with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, results-driven environment. Strong communication skills.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is between $77,000 - $85,000/year in Denver and between $96,000 - $105,000/year for New York/San Francisco. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.


Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas. 

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required.
