About the Role:

Gusto is looking for a hands-on engineering leader to lead our worker-focused Members Experience team, responsible for building and scaling the Gusto app. This team empowers workers by enabling seamless access, delivering core experiences, and addressing key jobs to be done.

As part of the broader Mobile Core group within the Core Experiences organization, the Members Experience team plays a critical role in advancing Gusto’s mobile-first vision. The team enhances core mobile experiences, builds mobile commons for other application teams to leverage, and ensures a consistent, high-quality experience for our users. This includes enhancing the onboarding and home tab experiences, scaling feature capabilities such as push notifications, leveraging the power of AI on mobile and supporting other important jobs to be done.

In this role, you’ll lead a team of engineers and collaborate closely with cross-functional partners, stakeholders, and other app teams to drive innovation and deliver impact.

About the Team:

The Mobile Core group’s mission is to expand how we serve customers across Gusto’s entrepreneurship platform, creating seamless and cohesive experiences for Employers, Workers, and all other personas.

At Gusto, engineering is grounded in a high-performance, inclusive culture where collaboration and diverse perspectives fuel innovation. As an engineering leader, you'll help shape this culture by recruiting, mentoring, and developing top talent. You’ll partner with leadership to define strategy, set clear goals, and ensure teams are empowered to deliver meaningful results.

This is a highly impactful leadership role where you’ll take ownership of technical execution, drive strategic initiatives, and balance engineering excellence with practical business outcomes. You'll also champion operational improvements that elevate product performance, availability, and cost-efficiency.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Lead and scale the team: Recruit, mentor, and develop a diverse team of engineers while fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performance culture, focused on career growth and business impact
  • Work cross-functionally: Partner across different business units to deliver an end to end product experience
  • Own delivery of technical solutions: Lead planning, execution, and delivery of impactful engineering projects, balancing technical excellence with practical business outcomes.
  • Drive strategic roadmaps: Work closely with leadership to set priorities, define both short-term and long-term goals, and ensure accountability for progress and delivery.
  • Foster innovation: Encourage a culture of growth experimentation and continuous improvement within the team, leveraging insights to drive meaningful enhancements.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, including experience with backend systems and native mobile development.
  • 2–4 years of engineering management experience including coaching, mentoring, and sustaining high-performing teams
  • Experience leading multi-quarter, large-scale technical initiatives as a tech lead or engineering manager.
  • Strong understanding of multi-platform products (e.g., iOS, Android, backend APIs), experience working with fullstack, and cross-platform engineering teams.
  • Experience building horizontal platform solutions that serve other engineering teams.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills—you’re comfortable navigating complexity and bringing together teams across orgs.
  • A strong service mindset—you lead with curiosity, care deeply about people, and empower those around you.
