About the Role:

As a Payroll Operations Business Analyst, you will be responsible for identifying areas where we can increase our  efficiency, strengthen our business processes, and improve our Gustomers’ experience. You will often work closely with others throughout PayOps to collaborate, remediate, and drive our operational rigor and overall accuracy of the work that we do. You will be responsible for analyzing business processes, influencing strategies to enhance efficiency and productivity. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a deep understanding of payroll operations.

About the Team:

In this role, you will enable and/or inform us of the building of a roadmap through tactical insights and impact assessments. You will be responsible for creating mechanisms and structure to track, define and analyze gaps and dependencies, and you will flex cross functionally throughout Payroll Operations.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Identify and champion opportunities to use AI tools and automation to make our workflows smarter, reduce manual effort, and strengthen data accuracy across Payroll Operations.
  • Communicate findings, recommendations, and project updates to stakeholders and leadership.
  • Lead change initiatives aimed at enhancing the customer and Gustie experience and improving process efficiency.
  • Leverage data and dashboards to track key metrics, forecast volume and headcount needs, and solve operational challenges, ensuring the team is well-prepared to meet future demands and support informed business decisions.
  • Serve as an intermediary between Payroll Operations teams (e.g., TaxRes, Tax Filing Compliance, Compliance Operations), facilitating clear communication, building consensus, and aligning on solutions to operational challenges.
  • Partner with PEs to make impactful, data-driven decisions. 
  • Partner with CX Data and Insights team to assist with gathering requirements and validating dashboards.
  • Take ownership of quarterly and annual objectives, tracking and reporting progress to drive accountability and results within the team.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 3-4 years of relevant experience with a strong understanding of Tax Operations processes.
  • Proven project management success implementing end-to-end programs. 
  • Proactive, self-starter with the ability to work independently, demonstrating critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in data tools (e.g., SQL, Tableau, Google Sheets/Airtable, Redash, Asana) and experience creating queries, building reports, and conducting analysis.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to identify trends, assess their impact, and provide actionable insights that inform team decisions.
  • Effective communicator skilled in conveying complex data insights to peers and leadership and facilitating cross-team collaboration.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with a continuous improvement mindset and comfort working in dynamic, ambiguous environments.
  • AI Literacy & Application: Demonstrates the ability to effectively use AI-powered tools to analyze data, generate insights, and improve operational workflows.
  • Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Proactively explores how AI and automation can streamline processes, reduce errors, and enhance team efficiency.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is $67,755/yr to $96,571/yr in Denver & most major metro locations, and $82,450/yr to $107,185/yr for San Francisco & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.


Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas. 

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees.
