THE OPPORTUNITY

We are looking for an in-house Labor & Employment Counsel Manager to join our European legal team!

We are seeking a highly experienced and business-focused Labor & Employment Counsel Manager to join our Legal Department. Based in Lisbon OR Madrid, you will be the primary in-house employment law expert for our operations in Europe and a key advisor for employment and labour matters across  Europe.

This role requires a proven track record in complex advisory work, strategic litigation management, and the ability to partner closely with senior Human Resources (HR) and business leaders on international projects and day-to-day operations.

YOUR IMPACT

  • Serve as the lead expert on all aspects of applicable EU local laws including contracts, terminations, working time, compensation, benefits, and local compliance requirements.
  • Provide timely, pragmatic, and commercially focused legal advice on a wide range of employment and labour law issues across our European operations, with a focus on Portugal, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, UK or other key jurisdictions.
  • Manage and direct all employment litigation and disputes  working effectively with external counsel to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Lead the employment law aspects of major corporate transactions  ,(i.e.  restructurings, outsourcing/insourcing, .
  • Advise on  compensation  as well as complex issues involving non-competes, restrictive covenants, and trade secrets.
  • Develop, draft, and implement European-wide employment policies, handbooks, and standard contract templates to ensure consistency and compliance with applicable EU Directives and local laws.
  • Provide strategic counsel on  Employee Relations (ER) matters, including disciplinary actions, grievances, internal investigations (e.g., whistleblowing), and performance management.
  • Advise on matters related to Works Councils and Trade Union relations in jurisdictions where they exist, including collective bargaining obligations and information/consultation requirements.
  • Monitor and communicate key legislative and regulatory changes in Europe, providing risk assessments and actionable guidance to HR and business stakeholders.

WHO YOU ARE

  • Law Degree: Qualified lawyer with a valid practicing certificate in Portugal or another major European jurisdiction (e.g., Portuguese Advogado or equivalent).
  • Experience: 8+ years of progressive, dedicated employment law experience, gained in a reputable international law firm and/or as an in-house counsel for a multinational corporation. .
  • Cross- Countries  Expertise: Deep and demonstrable expertise in working across different jurisdictions, building scalability, sharing best practices while adapting to local needs. 
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English (written and spoken) is mandatory. Fluency in Portuguese is highly preferred, and additional European languages (e.g., Spanish, French, German) are a significant asset.
  • Strategic & Commercial Acumen: Ability to translate complex legal requirements into practical, business-focused solutions that align with the company’s strategic goals.
  • Leadership & Stakeholder Management: Proven ability to influence and manage relationships with senior executives, HR partners, and external counsel across different cultures and time zones.
  • Communication: Excellent negotiation, drafting, and presentation skills.
  • Autonomy: Proven ability to operate independently, manage a high-volume workload, prioritize effectively, and handle highly sensitive/confidential matters with discretion.
