Forward-Deployed Product Engineer
Habitat Health empowers older adults to experience more good days in their homes and communities. Through the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), we provide comprehensive medical care along with support for daily needs such as meals, transportation, and in‑home assistance. We deliver coordinated clinical and social care in our centers and directly in participants’ homes, creating a fully integrated experience that brings peace of mind and a true sense of belonging. As we expand our scalable, affordable PACE model to meet the growing and complex needs of aging populations, our mission‑driven care teams continue to help participants live well on their own terms.
Habitat Health is supported by leading healthcare organizations and investors including New Enterprise Associates, Kaiser Permanente, and Town Hall Ventures. We are entering a period of significant growth and are looking for exceptional teammates to help us scale a better model of care for older adults. To learn more, visit www.habitathealth.com.
Role Scope:
Habitat Health’s Product team is focused on using AI, technology, and disciplined workflow design to turn how the company works into scalable, measurable capability. This is the first product and engineering hire into that function, and you’ll build the technology foundation and first tools that the company runs on.
The Forward-Deployed Product Engineer will design, build, and deploy AI-enabled tools – agents, copilots, automations, and technology-enabled workflows – that live inside day-to-day work across clinical, operational, growth, administrative, and support functions. You will write the code, own the architecture, and take each tool from prototype to production. You also carry the product sense to decide what is worth building – working with teams on the ground to understand how the work happens, rethinking it from first principles, and shipping solutions that measurably improve productivity, quality, and consistency.
You own each tool end-to-end – the data layer, integrations, agent and prompt design, evaluation, interface, and enhancements after it ships. As a founding hire in the function, you’ll work directly with executive leadership and functional owners to decide where technology creates the most value – and then go and build it.
Core Responsibilities & Expectations for the Role
System Architecture & AI Agent Development
- Partner with engineering resources to build a unified data and tooling layer on top of Habitat Health’s existing infrastructure that AI tools can be built and deployed on cleanly and efficiently
- Design, build, test, and ship production-grade AI tools, copilots, agents, and automations embedded in day-to-day work, owning each solution end-to-end from data layer through to interface.
- Run structured evaluations against operational and clinical expectations, and debug failure modes before they reach users.
- Maintain and improve what you build – monitor tools in production, fix what breaks, and write documentation that lets people use them without technical support.
Workflow & Product Design
- Embed with care and outreach teams, observe work as it happens, prototype solutions, support implementation, and drive adoption.
- Map current-state clinical and operational workflows and redesign them - rethinking handoffs, decision points, and documentation, and combining AI and automation with the right operational changes rather than simply layering technology onto existing processes.
- Identify and prioritize the highest-value opportunities to apply AI and technology, with a focus on efficiency, accelerating throughput and increasing quality of engagement and care.
- Define and track success metrics, including adoption, throughput, cycle time, quality, administrative burden reduction, user satisfaction, and measurable business impact.
- Partner closely with operations, technology & data, and legal & compliance to move quickly while maintaining quality, privacy, security, and regulatory standards.
Qualifications:
- 5-7+ years of experience with software engineering background and a track record of building and shipping production systems end to end in ambiguous, fast-paced environments, including building the 0-to-1 prototype yourself, not just spec it for others.
- Experience building with modern AI tooling – designing agents and prompting logic and running structured evaluations against real-world expectations.
- Strong hands-on technical skills: proficient in Python and SQL, comfortable working with data pipelines, and building on cloud infrastructure (Azure). Familiarity with data/ML platforms such as Databricks, Snowflake, or similar.
- Strong product judgement, including ability to distinguish between interesting ideas and high-ROI problems worth solving.
- Demonstrated ability to understand complex workflows and translate them into product, technology, and process solutions.
- Strong analytical orientation, with ability to define success metrics, use data to prioritize, and measure adoption and impact.
- Low ego and high ownership – as ready to write documentation and fix what breaks as you are to design and architect the system.
- Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills, including ability to run discovery with non-technical staff and translate technical constraints into plain language.
- Willingness to work in hybrid work environment with travel to Habitat Health centers as needed.
- Proof of medical clearance for communicable diseases, including a TB test.
- Proof of all immunizations are up to date.
- Proof of valid CA driver’s license, personal transportation, good driving record and auto insurance as required by State law.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in healthcare services, value-based care, provider operations, payer operations, Medicare, Medicaid, PACE, or complex care delivery.
- Experience building, deploying, or scaling technology-enabled solutions in complex or regulated environments.
- Familiarity with Salesforce, Epic, or healthcare data (EHR, referral, or enrollment data).
- Prior forward-deployed, embedded, or solutions engineering experience.
Compensation:
We take into account an individual’s qualifications, skillset, and experience to determine final salary.
