We're looking for an experienced Principal Advanced Manufacturing Equipment Engineer to lead the design, development, and implementation of cutting-edge manufacturing equipment and automation systems for our vehicle's General Assembly. This is a critical leadership role that will drive the strategy for a new era of vehicle manufacturing, ensuring that our assembly lines are the most efficient, safe, and robust in the world. You'll be a hands-on technical expert, leading a team to build and scale production from concept to high-volume manufacturing. - Strategic Equipment Leadership: Define and implement the long-term process and equipment strategy for our vehicle General Assembly lines, including conveyance, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), robotic fastening, fluid fill, and specialized torque control tooling.
- Full Lifecycle Management: Lead the entire equipment lifecycle: from concept, specification, vendor selection, design review, fabrication, installation, commissioning, ramp-up, and continuous improvement.
- New Facility & Line Setup: Lead the process and flow planning, layout, and installation of new General Assembly lines within existing and/or new facilities. This includes space optimization, utility requirements, and ensuring seamless integration of equipment.
- Technical Expertise: Act as the technical expert for all General Assembly equipment, applying deep knowledge of automation, robotics, machine vision, and controls systems to solve complex challenges.
- Vendor Management: Partner with equipment suppliers, leading technical discussions, negotiating specifications, and ensuring on-time delivery and performance.
- Design for Manufacturing (DFM) & Assembly (DFA): Lead the vehicle design and product engineering teams to optimize vehicle designs for manufacturability and assembly on automated equipment, reducing complexity and increasing quality.
- Process Optimization: Drive continuous improvement for equipment performance, uptime, yield, and cycle time through data analysis, root cause analysis, and the implementation of robust solutions.
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Work with Vehicle Design, Quality, Operations, and Facilities teams to ensure successful project execution and seamless integration of new equipment and improved Safety,Quality, Delivery and Cost of our vehicle production.
Who You Are:
- Experience: At least 15+ years of experience in advanced manufacturing engineering, with at least 8+ years focused on General Assembly equipment in the automotive EV or a related high-volume manufacturing industry.
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Deep expertise in General Assembly processes and equipment, including robotic applications (e.g., Kuka, Fanuc), conveyance systems, nut running, fluid fill, and sealing.
- Proven history of bringing new, complex manufacturing equipment online from concept to high-volume production.
- Strong understanding of automation principles, robotics, machine vision (e.g., Cognex, Keyence), and control systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, AutoCAD) for reviewing equipment designs and layouts.
- Proven project management experience with a track record of successfully leading large-scale equipment projects.
- Ability to perform root cause analysis and implement effective corrective actions for equipment issues.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.
- Preferably, experience with a startup environment.
- Practice of Lean Manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodologies.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or similar certification.

California Pay Range
$160,000 - $190,000 USD
