Aerodynamics Engineer
At Heart Aerospace we develop the ES-30, a regional hybrid-electric airplane with a capacity of 30 passengers, an electric zero-emission range of 200 km and an extended hybrid range of 800 km. Heart is targeting type certification of the ES-30 by the end of the decade.
Your mission
Heart is building a hybrid, battery-electric regional aircraft to decarbonize and democratize aviation. As an Aerodynamics Engineer on the Flight Sciences team, you will be responsible for the development and optimization of the aerodynamic models of the aircraft.
You will report to the Flight Sciences Director. Your place of work will be at our office located in Los Angeles, California.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Support aircraft development via aerodynamic design and analysis.
- Inform design criteria selection by integrating with other engineering disciplines.
- Support trade studies, detailed design efforts as well as ground- and flight testing.
- Develop and improve aerodynamics standards, methods, tools, processes, and best practices.
- Collaborate with peers, leadership and other stakeholders to solve complex and multidisciplinary technical problems. Guide technical decisions by balancing risks and opportunities.
You'll Bring These Qualifications For Aerodynamics Engineer:
- Proficiency with CFD tools such as FlightStream, FUN3D, or similar. Experience in grid generation and meshing techniques for various geometries, ensuring accurate and efficient simulations.
- Familiarity with methods to establish aircraft performance as well as stability & control characteristics, both analytically and via wind tunnel or flight testing.
- Experience correlating analysis results with test data.
- Software development experience in Python or Matlab or a similar language.
- Excellent verbal & written communication skills in English.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a startup environment with high accountability expectations.
These Qualifications Would Be Nice to Have:
- 2+ years professional experience in aerodynamic analysis, or equivalent
- Strong fundamentals including knowledge of simplified formulas for hand-calcs, semiempirical methods, and when to apply different approaches.
- Proven ability setting up scripted optimization pipelines that include aerodynamic solvers.
- Experience with software version control, continuous integration and maintenance best practices.
- Familiarity with Siemens NX and Teamcenter, or similar CAD and PLM tools.
- Working knowledge of transport aircraft systems and operation.
- Ability to handle and maintain Mass Properties datasets.
- Wind tunnel or flight test experience.
- Familiarity with cross-functional aircraft development programs and their certification criteria, for example FAA Part 23 or 25.
- Flight experience, for example Private Pilot (PPL) or above.
