Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, Landing Gear
At Heart Aerospace, we’re shaping the future of sustainable aviation with the ES-30, a regional hybrid-electric aircraft designed to carry 30 passengers with a 200 km all-electric, zero-emission range and an extended 400 km hybrid range. Heart is targeting type certification by the end of the decade.
Your Mission
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, Landing Gear, you will design, analyze, and develop Landing Gear Systems for the ES-30 aircraft. In this role you'll be creating new solutions from first principles, making critical trade-offs, and the opportunity to see your work fly. You'll work closely with structures, flight controls, and systems integration teams to deliver landing gear that's lightweight, robust, and optimized for our unique operational requirements. This is a hands-on, high-impact role where your decisions shape the aircraft.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Design and develop landing gear systems and components (struts, actuators, drag braces, torque links) in accordance with airworthiness requirements and customer specifications
- Perform structural and fatigue analyses to validate landing gear designs against static, dynamic, and impact load cases
- Develop and maintain detailed CAD models and engineering drawings using CATIA or similar tools, ensuring full compliance with GD&T standards
- Support design reviews (PDR, CDR) by preparing technical documentation, trade studies, and design justification reports
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including stress, systems, manufacturing, and certification engineers to drive designs from concept through production release
- Interface with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure components meet design intent, tolerances, and material specifications
- Contribute to the resolution of technical non-conformances and engineering dispositions raised during manufacturing and testing phases
Skills & Requirements:
You'll Bring These Qualifications for Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, Landing Gear:
- 5+ years of experience in aerospace structural design, with exposure to landing gear systems or undercarriage components preferred
- Proficiency in CAD software (CATIA V5/V6 preferred) and PDM/PLM systems (Windchill, ENOVIA)
- Familiarity with relevant airworthiness standards such as CS-25 / FAR Part 25, and design guidance materials (e.g., SAE ARP, MIL-spec)
- Working knowledge of materials commonly used in landing gear applications, including high-strength steels, titanium alloys, and surface treatments
- Experience with fatigue life estimation and damage tolerance methodologies is a strong asset
- Strong analytical mindset with the ability to balance design performance, weight, cost, and manufacturability
These Qualifications Would Be Nice to Have:
- Thorough familiarity with aerospace design and regulatory standards (e.g., FAA, EASA) such as DO-160G, MIL-STD-810, or similar.
- Demonstrated experience with hand-calculation methods for preliminary and verification analysis of complex mechanical systems.
- Strong understanding of mechanical manufacturing fundamentals, including advanced GD&T concepts and application for mechanisms.
- Proven capability to take designs from concept through to analysis and production, working independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Structural Engineering.
