Senior Technologist - Radiation Safety and Nuclear Science
About Helion
We are a fusion power company based in Everett, WA, with the mission to build the world's first fusion power plant, enabling a future with unlimited clean electricity. Our vision is a world with clean, reliable, and affordable energy for everyone.
Since Helion's founding in 2013, we have raised over $1 billion from long-time investors such as Sam Altman, Mithril, and Capricorn Investment Group as well as new investors SoftBank and Lightspeed to propel us forward. Our last prototype, Trenta, completed 10,000 high-power pulses and reached plasma temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius (9 keV). We are now operating Polaris, our next prototype on the path to the world's first fusion power plant.
This is a pivotal time to join Helion. You will tackle real-world challenges with a team that prizes urgency, rigor, ownership, and a commitment to delivering hard truths – values essential to achieving what no one has before. Together, we will change the future of energy, because the world can't wait.
What You Will Be Doing:
You will apply advanced technical expertise to support engineering research, development, and manufacturing by independently executing materials testing, operating analytical systems, and performing precision fabrication that ensures diagnostic readiness and high-quality results.
You will configure test setups, maintain and troubleshoot instruments, refine procedures, to drive technical solutions across the department. You will report to the Lead RaSNS Technologist and this is an onsite role located at our Everett office.
You will:
- Operate and maintain materials testing and analytical equipment (load frames, profilometers, durometers, microscopy, SEM).
- Execute test plans according to ASTM standards, or work with Engineers to design bespoke test plans, including sample preparation, fixturing, and data reporting and analysis.
- Document procedures, calibration steps, and test results with strong discipline and clarity, partner with engineers to validate test configurations and communicate results that inform design decisions.
- Provide guidance to early career Technologists on equipment setup, fabrication techniques, and safe work practices.
- Develop working knowledge of radiation safety practices, including contamination control, monitoring techniques, and controlled-area workflows.
Required Skills:
- Strong proficiency with mechanical testing systems and imaging tools (approximately 8+ years of hands-on, independent execution in similar roles).
- Hands-on fabrication capability, including fixture design, assembly, and precision measurement (approximately 8+ years in comparable environments).
- Experience executing structured test workflows and ensure reliable data quality.
- Familiarity working in controlled, high-risk, or radiological environments is preferred but not required. This includes adherence to safety, access control, and contamination-prevention protocols.
- Leads troubleshooting of mechanical, instrumentation, and workflow failures, identifying root cause and driving corrective action without requiring step-by-step guidance.
- Produces clear technical documentation and enforces procedural, calibration, and quality standards to prevent repeat failures and protect downstream engineering decisions.
- Partners with engineers to interpret, clarify, and translate design intent into robust, real-world test setups that surface meaningful performance data.
