The Opportunity
Hillel Ontario is searching for its next Advocacy and Engagement Coordinator at Hillel Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) in Toronto, ON. Our ideal candidate is an outgoing, creative and engaging individual with a strong Jewish and Israel background. They comfortably build one-on-one relationships with students, put on awesome events around campus, and help inspire students to make a commitment to Jewish life. They will be responsible for coordinating and implementing Hillel Ontario’s advocacy strategy on a local campus level and will play an integral role in managing, both proactively and reactively, advocacy-related issues on campus. They are a self-starter and capable multitasker who will use these skills to engage students and drive Hillel’s mission, values and goals.
Applicants should be well acquainted with utilizing social media platforms for promotion and engagement. They will be expected to be the social media point person for the campus and supervise the student leader working on Hillel TMU accounts.
What You’ll Do
Advocacy
- Champion Jewish students in developing and implementing advocacy programming and campaigns, helping to amplify their voices on campus
- Support students in responding to and navigating incidents of antisemitism, providing resources, guidance, and reporting support in coordination with the Campus Director and Hillel Ontario’s central Advocacy team
- Cultivate student leadership and activism among students interested in advocacy, connecting them with relevant campus and community resources
- Monitor, track and thoroughly document incidents of antisemitism and bias
- Collaborate with other Jewish and Israel advocacy organizations, strengthening and prioritizing community partnerships
Engagement
- Ensure a visible Jewish presence on campus
- Identify and contact uninvolved student populations and develop strategies for engaging them independently, and with existing student leaders
- Develop one-on-one relationships with Jewish students by meeting them where they live (in residence), work and/or study, utilizing creative methods to reach and engage them
- Work with student leaders on refining their Engagement best practices through tabling, coffee chats, networking and welcoming at programs
- Working with and coordinating with other Jewish groups on campus like Chabad, AEPi, etc.
- Building relationships with professionals and student leadership of campus groups
- Manage social media platforms (Instagram, Tiktok etc.) to optimize user engagement and bolster our brand
Student Leadership Development
- Model positive leadership
- Build on the current leadership model by engaging new leadership students
- Advise and support the student executive boards and their committees
- Identify leadership development opportunities for empowering students (including but not limited to opportunities in student government and through CJPAC)
- Coordinate and support intern initiatives
- Identify future leaders and help engage them in the pursuit of leadership opportunities on campus
- Work with the campus lead on student engagement and Israel trip recruitment
Program Development
- Support student-initiated programs; attend programs when appropriate (including evenings, weekends, Jewish holidays)
- Identify and seek innovative program areas to reach new student populations
- Co-lead the execution of Hillel TMU’s Israel engagement strategy on campus
- Take the lead on the logistical aspects of large scale social events
- Help organize logistics for professional development and networking events
- Support the development of programming for Jewish micro-communities on campus (i.e. LGBTQ+ Jews, Sephardi Jews, Orthodox Jews, Jews of colour etc.)
Administrative Responsibilities
- Liaise with the marketing and communications team in coordinating creation of all materials (print and web)
- CRM data entry
- Logistics support for programs
- Support Hillel Ontario initiatives, including regional program campaigns, initiatives, fundraising efforts, etc.
What You’ll Bring to the Job
- Bachelor’s degree and 0-2 years relevant experience
- Strong interpersonal skills and the desire to work in a collaborative, team environment
- Ability to multitask and troubleshoot effectively
- Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills
- Energy, a sense of humour, flexibility and maturity
- Valid driver’s license and access to vehicle is an asset
