Campus Rabbi at Hillel at Binghamton

Binghamton, New York, United States

Campus Rabbi

Hillel at Binghamton

Role Overview

Hillel at Binghamton is seeking a passionate Campus Rabbi to serve as a dynamic spiritual leader for one of the most vibrant Jewish student populations in North America. This is a unique opportunity to help shape a campus culture that embraces serious Jewish living, rooted in learning, heartfelt tefillah, and joyous observance of mitzvot.

Binghamton is home to many students who are already actively engaged in Jewish practice - and many more who are seeking meaningful connection to tradition and community. As Campus Rabbi, you will nurture and deepen that commitment through inspiring teaching, pastoral guidance, and leadership of spirited communal experiences. You will be a visible and trusted presence - whether facilitating Jewish learning that challenges and elevates, leading meaningful Shabbat tefillah, or learning one-on-one with students seeking to grow in observance.

Working alongside a talented staff team, you will help infuse Hillel’s programming with religious depth. This role is ideal for a rabbi with deep spiritual conviction, a warm and approachable demeanor, and a calling to inspire young Jews to live a passionate and joyful Jewish life. You will work collaboratively with student leaders and staff to create accessible and relevant Jewish programming, support students in celebrating Shabbat and holidays, and provide pastoral care and guidance. Whether facilitating Jewish learning, leading thought-provoking discussions, or simply meeting students one-on-one for coffee, you will play a vital role in shaping a welcoming and pluralistic Jewish environment at Binghamton.

This is an opportunity for a rabbi who is passionate about student engagement, eager to innovate, and committed to fostering Jewish life in a way that is meaningful, approachable, and empowering.

What You’ll Do

  • Engage students in conversations, experiences, and opportunities to further Hillel’s vision of Jewish diversity and pluralism.
  • Be a strong ritual and leadership presence at Shabbat and holidays.
  • Build relationships with students through meaningful conversations and by creating connections to opportunities to participate in Jewish life on campus.
  • Provide compassionate, non-judgemental pastoral care, including crisis support, grief counseling, and resilience-building, while integrating Jewish values into wellness strategies. Provide referrals when appropriate.
  • Innovate and experiment with different engagement methodologies designed to reach students who are currently uninvolved.
  • Serve as the lead educator and administrator for cohort-based Jewish learning opportunities.
  • Develop and facilitate creative educational approaches and innovative curricula targeted towards specific micro-communities.
  • Be a part of a collaborative process to create a diverse set of student programs and initiatives.
  • Serve as a liaison with on-campus partners for interfaith and religious life projects.
  • Serve as a staff member on immersive experiences such as Birthright Israel and alternative breaks.

What You’ve Accomplished

  • Rabbinic ordination and up to 2 years of experience (or equivalent experience in Jewish community leadership).
  • Experience in community engagement, with a focus on outreach strategies that are effective and durable.
  • Appreciation for and experience with Generation Z or prior generations of 18-22 year old people through Hillel, youth movements, camp, or experiential Jewish education.

What You’ll Bring to the Job

  • A superb and textured knowledge of Jewish text, ranging from traditional to contemporary sources.
  • Experience in leading complex conversations about Judaism and Israel in a way that is approachable and meets students at various points in their personal Jewish journeys.
  • A commitment to creating an inclusive, vibrant, and pluralistic Jewish community.
  • Passion for connecting with people from different backgrounds, with the goal of building authentic and meaningful relationships.
  • Excellent communication and active listening skills.

What You’ll Receive

  • Competitive salary in the non-profit marketplace. The salary range for this role is $100,000 - $110,000, commensurate with experience.
  • A comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plan with employer match, life insurance, Long Term Disability (LTD), Flexible Spending Plan, vacation/sick time, and parental leave.
  • Great professional development, mentoring, and skill-building opportunities.
  • We embrace a culture of Israel excursions and Jewish learning for staff during the summer months.
  • Additional opportunities may be available for a partner, depending on experience in Jewish educational landscape.
