Vice President, Accounting and Finance

Hillel International

Role Overview

Are you an accounting leader ready to strengthen the backbone of a mission-driven nonprofit? Hillel International, the largest Jewish campus organization in the world, is seeking a Vice President, Accounting and Finance to elevate its financial integrity, controls, and reporting while supporting smart, mission-aligned decision-making.

Reporting to and partnering with the CFO, the Vice President, Accounting and Finance is the organization’s lead for accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, audit, compliance, and treasury. You will oversee the monthly close, consolidation, technical accounting, grants and restricted funds, and tax filings, while modernizing processes and systems. You’ll manage a finance team of 3–4 direct reports and steward a complex, multi-million-dollar operating budget with diversified funding streams. This is a hybrid role based in Washington, DC.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the accounting function end to end: monthly close, consolidations, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation in accordance with US GAAP for nonprofits.
  • Own internal controls and policy: design, document, and maintain effective controls over financial reporting, cash, payables, payroll, and purchasing.
  • Direct annual external audits and any donor or compliance audits; manage auditor relationships and deliver timely PBCs and audit responses.
  • Oversee restricted funds, grant accounting, and revenue recognition, including pledges, contributions, memberships, events, and sponsorships.
  • Manage treasury, cash forecasting, and liquidity; optimize banking, credit cards, expense management, and investment operations in coordination with the CFO.
  • Strengthen accounting systems and data quality, drive improvements in NetSuite, integrations with Salesforce, and reporting automation.
  • Produce accurate, timely financials and dashboards, present results, variances, and insights to senior leadership, the Board, and key stakeholders.
  • Partner with the CFO on budgeting, forecasting, scenario planning, and organization-wide financial stewardship.
  • Build, mentor, and develop a high-performing team with clear roles, career paths, and service-oriented support for departments and campus partners.

What You’ll Need to Succeed (Requirements)

  • 15+ years of progressive accounting and finance leadership, including nonprofit experience.
  • CPA required. Big Four or national firm audit background is a plus.
  • Deep knowledge of US GAAP for nonprofits, including revenue recognition for contributions and grants, endowment accounting, and fund restrictions.
  • Hands-on experience leading audits, monthly closes, consolidations, and internal controls in complex, multi-entity environments.
  • Systems proficiency: NetSuite (or similar ERP); experience with Salesforce integrations and modern expense/credit card platforms (e.g., Ramp).
  • Clear, concise communicator with Board-facing experience and the ability to translate technical accounting into actionable insights.
  • Proven track record building teams, upgrading processes, and implementing scalable policies and systems.

What You’ll Receive

  • Salary range: $200,000–$220,000.
  • Comprehensive benefits, including health, retirement, and generous leave.
  • Hybrid work environment based in Washington, DC.
  • The chance to make a lasting impact by strengthening financial operations at scale for a mission-driven nonprofit.
