Director of AI Strategy & Enablement

Washington, District of Columbia, United States

Director of AI Strategy & Enablement

Hillel International

Role Overview

Hillel International seeks a Director of AI Strategy & Enablement to lead a movement-wide effort to build lasting AI capability across the Hillel professional network. Reporting to the Senior Director,  Organizational Learning, this leader will turn emerging technology into practical, mission-aligned work — working with Hillel’s Technology Services department as its primary internal partner. The Director will work in close partnership with a cross-departmental team to help spot opportunities, redesign workflows, develop best practices and ethical guidelines, and build the organization’s skills to use AI well.

This is not a help-desk role. Rather than fielding technical requests from a central seat, the Director equips every team to do its best work with AI and builds the distributed capacity for that work to sustain itself. The role calls for strong facilitation and change-management prowess, the range to move fluidly between organizational strategy and hands-on implementation, and the ability to guide a complex, multi-site organization toward confident, responsible AI use.

The initial focus is service to Hillel International’s Schusterman International Center (SIC), with consultation and resource sharing across campus Hillels anticipated in year two. This position is fully remote for eligible candidates based in the U.S. This is a two-year position; continuation beyond the initial term will depend on demonstrated impact and sustained funding.

What You’ll Do

Strategic Intelligence and Insights

  • Partner with Hillel’s Organizational Learning team to unlock greater value from existing data, research, and evaluation infrastructure.
  • Use AI to connect information across student engagement, program outcomes, campus performance, development, and operations — surfacing patterns and identifying what most reliably drives strong Hillels and meaningful student outcomes.
  • Build the organization’s capacity to ask large, consequential questions of its data and act on the answers, aligning people, funding, and strategy accordingly.

Leadership and Enablement

  • Provide vision, governance, and direction-setting for AI adoption across Hillel International and the broader movement.
  • Serve as an embedded consultant to teams through a concierge model — facilitating opportunity identification, workflow redesign, and best-practice development.
  • Partner with each team’s designated AI enablement lead, transferring capability so teams can sustain and extend their own AI practice.
  • Build the peer-to-peer network through which successful approaches are shared, refined, and adopted across the organization.
  • Establish clear, practical principles for responsible AI use — spanning data privacy and quality, bias and accuracy, transparency, and the environmental footprint of these tools — and help staff weigh those considerations in their work.
  • Engage staff skepticism directly, treating ethical and values-based hesitation as legitimate, and champion a philosophy of AI as an amplifier of expertise and creativity rather than a replacement for it.

Technology Platforms and Infrastructure

  • Guide selection and rollout of enterprise-grade AI platforms, secure access, and the technology ecosystem required for secure, effective adoption.
  • Establish standards that protect data integrity and organizational quality while keeping tools practical and genuinely useful to staff.
  • Coordinate operational implementation, integration, and support.

Training and Integration

  • Develop and oversee an enablement strategy spanning staff training, embedded consultation, peer learning, and hands-on implementation support.
  • Build AI training modules into Hillel’s existing professional development programs.
  • Equip staff not only to use AI tools, but to identify opportunities, solve problems, and apply AI in ways that advance organizational goals and student outcomes.
  • Build honest discussion of AI’s limitations, risks, and trade-offs into enablement, so staff adopt these tools with awareness rather than uncritical enthusiasm.

What You’ll Bring to the Job

We’re looking for a builder, collaborator, and enabler — someone who is genuinely fluent in AI, energized by teaching others, and comfortable being the person who defines this work rather than inheriting a playbook. You do not need to be a software engineer. You need to understand what today’s AI tools can and can't do, and how to help people use them well.

Required

  • Significant professional experience (typically 8+ years) in learning and development, change management, organizational development, digital transformation, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated hands-on fluency with modern AI tools — large language models and enterprise AI platforms — including a working understanding of their capabilities and limitations.
  • A bias towards collaboration and partnership when setting priorities, building from scratch, and working fluidly from organizational strategy to hands-on implementation.
  • A track record of driving technology adoption across an organization, moving people from curiosity to confident, sustained practice, including the ability to translate complex technical concepts into plain language and practical workflows.
  • Strong facilitation and adult-learning instincts, with experience designing and delivering training or enablement for non-technical staff.
  • The ability to speak credibly and honestly about the ethical, cultural, and environmental dimensions of AI — including its limitations and risks — and to help colleagues navigate genuine concerns rather than dismiss them.
  • A conviction that AI should enhance human creativity and expertise rather than substitute for it, and the judgment to help teams draw that line in their own work.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, including the ability to advise and influence senior leadership.
  • Sound judgment on data integrity, privacy, and the responsible use of organizational information.

Preferred

  • Passion for Hillel International’s mission.
  • Experience in a nonprofit, mission-driven, higher-education, or multi-site/federated organization.
  • Familiarity with the tools in Hillel’s environment — Claude, Gemini, Google Workspace, Salesforce, and Slack AI.
  • Practical experience building AI workflows, prompts, or connectors that embed an organization’s knowledge and voice into its tools.
  • Familiarity with the current landscape of AI ethics, responsible-AI frameworks, or the environmental considerations of large-scale AI use.
  • Data and analytics literacy sufficient to help teams ask larger questions of their existing data.
  • Prior experience standing up a new program, function, or capability in a growing or evolving organization.
  • Connection to or familiarity with Jewish communal life, campus life, or the populations Hillel serves.

What You’ll Receive

Competitive salary in the nonprofit marketplace. The salary range for this role is $115,000 to $130,000.

Flexible work hours and location. Please note that in order to be considered, you must be legally authorized to work and be based in the United States. We fully support remote work, with a preference for candidates who can work hybrid (1-2 days/week) at our Washington, D.C. headquarters.

A comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plan, Life, AD&D, and Long-Term Disability insurance, Flexible Spending Accounts, generous vacation and sick time, and parental leave.

The opportunity to shape a critical national strategy at a defining moment for Jewish students and Jewish campus life.

Please share one example of something you've created to help non-technical people learn to use a new tool or technology — for instance, a quick-start guide, a short training video, a job aid, or a walkthrough. Existing work is perfectly fine and preferred. Please don't build something new for us. If you need to remove or redact anything confidential, that's expected. In two or three sentences, tell us who the audience was and what you were trying to help them do.

A respected, veteran colleague tells you they don't want to use AI in their work. Their concern is sincere: they feel that letting AI draft or ideate for them would flatten their own voice and erode a craft they've spent years developing. They aren’t hostile to technology — they just don't want to trade away something they value.

Write the email response you would actually send this person (fewer than 200 words). We're not looking for a policy statement or a list of AI’s benefits. We want to see how you would genuinely engage with a thoughtful skeptic. Please write it yourself, though you’re welcome to use AI tools as you normally would in your work.
