Sanitation Manager

The Sanitation Manager is responsible for the effective cleanliness and maintenance of the entire facility to ensure that the plant adheres to strict compliance standards. This role is responsible for leading best practice development, sanitation compliance, overseeing pest control programs, team training, chemical inventories, and is the point of contact for technical support in the facility.

The Sanitation Manager must have an educational background and technical aptitude as it relates to food sanitation programs, chemical handling, and Food Safety programs. A general knowledge of food and environmental microbiological testing as well as preventative measures including sanitary design and automated sanitation and efficiency are required. The Sanitation Manager also leads operations with start-ups as well as day to day operations after sanitation is completed including on non-sanitation days.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement, and manage strategic sanitation program, policies, plans and processes (SSOPs, Master Sanitation Schedule, CIP) to ensure that sanitation meets regulatory, safety, and customer compliance.
  • Manage and partner with 3rd party sanitation contractor to ensure performance standards are being met.  Participate in RFP’s as required.
  • Manage daily headcount, build a culture of positive accountability, and coordinate issue resolution.
  • Coach and train sanitation team on proper cleaning practices and sets goals for consistent performance excellence.
  • Participate in external trainings and continue to build skillset.
  • Clearly and professionally communicate expectations to sanitation team and to other departments.
  • Ensure that the plant is cleaned at the established frequency and ready to start production on time. 
  • Investigate sanitation issues, review, and analyze data for pathogen monitoring, environmental monitoring programs, food safety audits, customer complaints as well as other sources, and utilizes the data to identify trends and take corrective/ preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Order and maintain inventory of all sanitation chemical supplies.
  • Manage annual sanitation plan: budget, forecast, and performance.
  • Manage the daily production operations from start-ups at the facility which includes all production leader’s department production schedules and product rotation CCP verification schedules.
  • Build culture with focus on food and personnel safety. Oversee safety committee, develops, and improves deficient areas, and review with the affected team members.
  • Partner with the leadership team to ensure compliance with the company’s Employee Personal Safety, Food Safety and Food Quality guidelines as well as customer requirements.
  • Work closely with Maintenance, Engineering, QA, EHS, and equipment vendors to ensure that new or modified equipment meets sanitary design and regulatory requirements prior to purchase and installation.
  • Travel up to 10% for personal/professional development and support HMF’s growth.
  • Provide production leadership as required
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School diploma with equivalent experience required; bachelor’s degree in food science, Microbiology, other science-related field preferred.
  • Five years' experience in Sanitation, and Operations/ processing as a Lead with verifiable leadership experience required.
  • Proficient in using computer systems and software, including Microsoft Office, to generate reports, analyze data, and communicate effectively.
  • Experience in inventory management and be able to maintain accurate records of stock levels and coordinate with suppliers when necessary.
  • Knowledge of food safety regulations and ensure that all work center activities comply with industry standards and guidelines (HACCP/USDA/GFSI/SQF).
  • Working knowledge of USDA and/ or FDA regulations required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • English required. Bilingual in Spanish or Portuguese preferred.
