
Accounting Manager
About the Role
Location: Raleigh, NC
The Accounting Manager will support the financial health of the business by managing accounting operations and contributing to process improvements and business insights. This role focuses on systematizing our accounting functions, exploring opportunities to leverage technology and automation, developing a deeper understanding of how finance connects to business operations, and supporting our VP of FP&A and CFO with financial analyses that support our ongoing operations and go-forward strategy. Managing and working alongside our accounting associate who handles routine processing, you'll focus on the analytical and improvement aspects of our financial operations while building skills for future growth.
Your Day-to-Day
Financial Operations & Process Improvement:
- Own the month-end close process with focus on accuracy and efficiency improvements.
- Identify and help implement systematic improvements to accounting workflows, including exploring automation tools.
- Maintain GAAP compliance while supporting process optimization and internal controls.
- Prepare financial analysis and reports that support leadership decision-making.
- Lead audit coordination and serve as key contact with external auditors.
Payroll Management:
- Own end-to-end payroll processing, including review, approval, and compliance
- Ensure accurate and timely payroll execution while maintaining proper documentation
- Coordinate with HR and external providers as needed
- Monitor payroll-related compliance and reporting requirements
Business Support & Cost Analysis:
- Work with operations teams to better understand business drivers and help identify cost management opportunities.
- Monitor financial and operational metrics to provide useful business insights.
- Support cross-functional initiatives by providing financial perspective and analysis.
- Help identify trends and opportunities that impact both financial performance and operations.
Technology & Process Development:
- Support exploration and implementation of accounting software improvements and automated workflows.
- Research AI and automation solutions for routine accounting tasks.
- Help with team training on new systems and improved processes.
- Assist in maintaining data integrity while reducing manual work through smart solutions.
Financial Planning & Analysis (“FP&A”) Support:
- Support budgeting and forecasting processes with detailed analysis and documentation.
- Provide variance analysis that helps connect financial performance to business activities.
- Help develop and maintain financial dashboards and KPI tracking.
- Assist with FP&A initiatives and special projects as needed
Team Collaboration & Development:
- Work closely with and provide guidance to the accounting associate
- Manage relationships with external payroll and benefits providers
- Collaborate with leadership on evolving the finance function within the organization
About You
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a high-growth or digital business.
- Strong GAAP knowledge and experience with financial reporting and internal controls
- Proficiency with accounting software (QuickBooks experience preferred), payroll systems, and advanced spreadsheet skills
- Interest in process improvement, automation, and exploring new technology solutions
- Analytical mindset with curiosity about how financial data connects to business operations
- Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across the organization
Highly Valued:
- Some exposure to business operations, cost analysis, or operational finance
- Familiarity with AI tools, automation platforms, or data analysis beyond traditional accounting
- Background in marketplace, digital media, or similar business models
- Experience working with and training junior staff
- Genuine interest in business strategy and desire to grow beyond traditional accounting roles
