Location: Austin, Texas
Department: Engineering / Audio
Experience: 7–10 years
Employment Type: Full-time

Position Summary

We are seeking a Senior Acoustic Engineer with 7–10 years of experience in acoustic and audio system development, preferably in the video conferencing, collaboration, consumer electronics, or professional audio industry.

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing acoustic systems for video conferencing products, including microphones, loudspeakers, acoustic echo cancellation, beamforming, sound source localization, noise reduction, and overall audio performance. This role requires strong hands-on engineering skills and the ability to work closely with hardware, software, DSP, mechanical, and product teams to deliver high-quality audio experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize acoustic systems for video conferencing devices, including microphones, loudspeakers, and audio signal paths.
  • Develop and tune microphone arrays, beamforming, sound source localization (SSL), and talker detection algorithms.
  • Analyze and optimize acoustic echo cancellation (AEC), noise reduction, dereverberation, automatic gain control, and other audio processing algorithms.
  • Perform acoustic measurements and characterize microphone and loudspeaker performance using laboratory equipment and industry-standard methodologies.
  • Develop acoustic test plans, measurement methodologies, and performance criteria for product development and certification.
  • Investigate and resolve audio quality issues such as echo, feedback, distortion, reverberation, noise, coloration, and poor speech intelligibility.
  • Analyze frequency response, polar patterns, directivity, SNR, THD, sensitivity, latency, and other acoustic/audio performance metrics.
  • Work closely with mechanical engineers on microphone and speaker placement, enclosure design, acoustic isolation, vibration coupling, and airflow/noise issues.
  • Collaborate with DSP/software engineers to develop, integrate, tune, and validate real-time audio processing algorithms.
  • Develop simulation and data-analysis tools using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.
  • Conduct subjective listening tests and correlate objective acoustic measurements with perceived audio quality.
  • Support product bring-up, debugging, certification, and production validation.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to define acoustic requirements and drive issues to resolution.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership in acoustic and audio system development.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies in audio AI, machine learning, spatial audio, microphone arrays, and intelligent conferencing systems.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Acoustics, Electrical Engineering, Audio Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7–10 years of relevant industry experience in acoustics, audio, DSP, or audio product development.
  • Strong understanding of acoustic fundamentals, microphone and loudspeaker characteristics, and room acoustics.
  • Hands-on experience with microphone arrays and audio system characterization.
  • Experience with audio DSP concepts and algorithms such as AEC, beamforming, noise reduction, dereverberation, AGC, and sound source localization.
  • Experience using acoustic measurement equipment and audio analysis tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Python, MATLAB, or similar engineering/data-analysis tools.
  • Experience analyzing recorded audio data and developing automated audio test and analysis tools.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across hardware, software, DSP, mechanical, and product engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing video conferencing, meeting room, speakerphone, soundbar, camera, or collaboration products.
  • Experience with microphone-array design and optimization for far-field speech capture.
  • Experience with beamforming, SSL, AEC, noise suppression, dereverberation, and speech enhancement.
  • Experience with audio AI/ML technologies for speech enhancement, speaker/talker detection, noise classification, or intelligent audio processing.
  • Knowledge of ITU, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or other conferencing audio specifications and certification requirements.
  • Experience with multi-channel audio, synchronized audio playback, low-latency audio systems, or networked audio such as AES67/RTP/PTP.
  • Experience with Linux/Android-based embedded audio systems.
  • Familiarity with audio interfaces such as I2S, TDM, USB Audio, and common audio codecs/ADCs.
  • Experience with acoustic simulation tools such as COMSOL, ANSYS, or equivalent.
  • Experience with automated audio testing and CI/test infrastructure.

Key Skills

Acoustics:
Room acoustics, microphone/loudspeaker characterization, frequency response, directivity, SPL, SNR, THD, reverberation, acoustic isolation

Audio DSP:
AEC, beamforming, SSL, noise suppression, dereverberation, AGC, speech enhancement, audio mixing
