Job Summary
We are seeking a Senior Audio Software Development Engineer to lead the development, implementation, and optimization of real-time audio algorithms for our next-generation video conferencing and collaboration endpoints. Working as the direct software counterpart to our Principal Audio Systems & Hardware Tuning Engineer, this role is critical to building a self-sustaining, best-in-class audio team right here in Austin.
You will take full ownership of the embedded audio software pipeline from raw multi-channel microphone capture up to the final speaker output. You will design, build, and optimize embedded software architectures that handle complex voice configurations, ensuring our software algorithms are perfectly aligned with our physical hardware components to achieve pristine, low-latency communication.
Key Responsibilities
-
Algorithm Optimization & Tuning: Implement, tune, and optimize advanced audio processing algorithms, including Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC), multi-microphone beamforming, Sound Source Localization (SSL), noise suppression, dereverberation, and Automatic Gain Control (AGC).
-
Multi-Channel Audio Architecture: Design and manage low-latency embedded audio pipelines to cleanly handle multi-channel inputs and synchronized outputs (e.g., combining 8-microphone array inputs across separate ADCs via ALSA/Linux layers).
-
Hardware-Software Co-Design: Collaborate intensely with the Austin onsite hardware team to calibrate software processing parameters based on actual physical transducer responses, coordinate mappings, and structural room acoustics.
-
Android/Embedded Linux Platforms: Extend and enrich embedded subsystems by developing unique audio capabilities within the Android Media Framework, Linux audio layers, and real-time DSP environments.
-
Next-Gen Audio AI Integration: Prototype, experiment, and integrate emerging machine learning and audio AI technologies for modern speech enhancement, speaker/talker detection, and dynamic noise classification.
-
Automated Validation Frameworks: Build robust audio software test infrastructure, automated parsing scripts, and continuous integration pipelines using Python or MATLAB to validate real-time digital signal processing outputs.
-
Ecosystem Certifications: Drive the software side of automated audio validation suites to pass strict third-party certification requirements (such as Microsoft Teams Rooms V5 and Zoom) under realistic meeting space conditions.
-
Technical Leadership: Act as a software mentor to junior developers and test engineers, enforcing high code quality, multi-threaded safety standards, and robust system documentation.
-
Networked Audio & Synchronization: Design, deploy, and maintain broadcast-grade networked audio configurations, implementing native AES67 / RTP streaming pipelines and ensuring strict sub-microsecond clock synchronization utilizing PTPv2 (IEEE 1588-2008) protocols over Local Area Networks (LAN).
-
Custom Linux Distribution Development: Architect, build, and optimize custom embedded operating system images using the Yocto Project compilation framework. Create custom layers, write bitbake recipes, modify device trees, and configure kernel parameters for deterministic, real-time performance.
Required Qualifications
-
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Audio Engineering, or a related field.
-
7–10+ years of professional experience developing embedded C/C++ audio applications in multi-threaded, real-time operating system environments.
-
Expert-level knowledge of digital signal processing (DSP) concepts specific to voice communication (AEC, beamforming, noise filters, and spatial audio processing).
-
Hands-on experience configuring, profiling, and debugging embedded audio frameworks within Linux (ALSA) or the Android Media Framework.
-
Proficiency with Python, MATLAB, or similar engineering tools to analyze recorded multi-channel audio data and build simulation profiles.
-
Familiarity with common digital audio interfaces (I2S, TDM, PDM, USB Audio) and interaction with external hardware components like premium ADCs, DACs, and amplifiers.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience with low-latency networked audio systems and synchronization protocols (e.g., PTP, RTP, AES67).
-
Direct experience writing or modifying real-time DSP firmware (e.g., Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, ARM Neon assembly/intrinsics, or dedicated audio DSPs).
-
Familiarity with training or deploying lightweight AI/ML models on embedded edge accelerators for real-time speech enhancement.
-
A proven portfolio of shipped commercial audio products (such as speakerphones, soundbars, or enterprise video endpoints).
Key Skills
-
Audio DSP Software: Multi-microphone processing, beamforming arrays, double-talk AEC optimization, speech enhancement, spatial audio, and intelligent noise gating.
-
Embedded Systems: Real-time C/C++, multi-threaded programming, Linux/Android audio drivers, software application testing, and memory optimization.
-
Tools: Python, MATLAB, Wireshark/network audio parsers, JTAG debuggers, and automated CI test infrastructure.
Preferred Certifications
• Programming Language/s Certification (Java, C++, Python, JavaScript, or similar)
Cross-Org Skills
• Effective Communication
• Results Orientation
• Learning Agility
• Digital Fluency
• Customer Centricity
Impact & Scope
• Impacts function and leads and/or provides expertise to functional project teams and may participate in cross-functional initiatives.
Complexity
• Works on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of multiple factors.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role means establishing a highly capable software audio team in Austin that no longer depends on distributed engineering assets to solve core audio pipeline bugs. You will successfully merge raw, multi-channel hardware capture with highly optimized software layers—ensuring our cylindrical video collaboration endpoints deliver natural, double-talk-capable, crystal-clear spatial audio that sails through tier-one industry certifications.
