About The Role

Humane is seeking a Senior Tax Manager to join our growing Finance team. You will report directly to our Controller and will be responsible for managing a wide range of tax functions, including both direct (income, corporate, property) and indirect (sales, VAT, subscription) tax.  In this role you will work closely with the finance team and cross functional partners to ensure tax compliance at the city, county, state and federal level, as well as managing various aspects of tax accounting transactions and entries. This position is open to remote candidates across the United States, with a preference for candidates able to work on-site in San Francisco occasionally.

What You Might Do

Corporate Tax:

  • Oversee all matters of tax compliance for the company
  • Manage Corporate Income taxes including federal, state, research and development credits.
  • Collaborate with third-party tax preparation agencies and manage relationships with tax authorities
  • Prepare and review tax returns and supporting schedules
  • Manage the tax aspects of our MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) business, including cellular subscription billing and compliance
  • Work independently to research and implement solutions for complex tax issues
  • Contribute to tax planning and strategy as the company grows

Indirect Tax:

  • Oversee indirect tax compliance, including sales tax, VAT, and subscription taxes.
  • Manage taxes on products/services sold across multiple states or globally
  • Oversee all sales taxes filings prepared by Avalara including cellular subscriptions tax filings.
  • Prepare and file all required returns with the FCC and Universal Service Contributors Fund.
  • Ensure registrations are completed as needed with various taxing jurisdictions at the state and federal level to ensure compliance.
  • Work closely with finance, legal, and operations teams on tax-related matters like financial reporting, M&A, or fundraising.
  • Work closely with our People Operations Manager to ensure all payroll tax filings and registrations are performed timely by ADP and supplemental filings occur by state and federal deadlines.
  • Prepare property tax filings for the county and state of California and New York.
  • Respond to all tax notices and provide timely responses to taxing authorities to avoid penalties and late fees.

Essential Qualifications 

  • Masters in Tax and/or CPA preferred
  • 10+ years of relevant tax accounting experience
  • Knowledge of GAAP
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Prior experience working in a rapidly growing technology (Hardware/Software) company ideally within AI, consumer electronics or subscription based services

Preferred Skills

  • Critical Thinking: Use critical thinking skills to analyze problems and find effective solutions. Analyze different tax initiatives or options to find the best solution for the company 
  • Relationship-building: Build and maintain strong relationships internally and externally
  • Attention to Detail: Review documents including tax forms and financial records. Possess a keen eye for detail
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills to communicate clearly cross functionally, and with external vendors

Salary: $205,000-$225,000
