ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a highly skilled Data Center Technician to join our team in Kelowna. In this hands-on role, you will be responsible for supporting the operation, maintenance, and upgrade of data center infrastructure, including power, cooling, network systems, and security. You will collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and customers to ensure that the data center meets the highest standards of reliability and performance. The role also requires adherence to critical compliance frameworks, including SOC 2 Type 2, CSA 282, ISO 27001, and PCI-DSS
Key Responsibilities:
Infrastructure Operations & Maintenance
- Daily Inspections & Monitoring: Perform daily walkthroughs and inspections of critical infrastructure systems such as HVAC, UPS, generators, PDUs, and fire suppression systems. Identify and escalate anomalies or issues to the appropriate support teams.
- Maintenance Support: Assist in both preventative and corrective maintenance activities in collaboration with vendors or internal engineering teams.
- Power Provisioning: Support power provisioning and de-provisioning at the rack and PDU level to ensure optimal power distribution.
- Alert Monitoring: Monitor and respond to alerts related to infrastructure and hardware health using DCIM (Data Center Infrastructure Management) and BMS (Building Management Systems) tools to proactively address issues.
- Capacity Planning: Participate in capacity planning discussions, focusing on space, power, and cooling resources for upcoming deployments and expansion projects
Physical & Hardware Support
- Rack & Stack: Rack, stack, and cable servers, storage, and networking equipment according to build plans and MOPs (Method of Procedures).
- Cable Installation & Troubleshooting: Terminate, test, and troubleshoot fiber optic (SM/MM) and copper (Cat5e/6/6a) cabling for both new and existing deployments, ensuring optimal performance.
- Cable Management: Maintain strict cable management, labeling, and documentation standards for all installations to ensure ease of maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Hardware Diagnostics: Perform diagnostics, component swaps (e.g., RAM, SSDs, NICs), and system reboots as directed by internal teams or customers.
- Equipment Deployments: Assist in the deployment and testing of servers, network devices, and storage systems for internal use and customer deployments.
Smart Hands & Customer Support
- Remote Hands Support: Act as an onsite “Smart Hands & Eyes” for both internal teams and customers requiring remote support, including device identification, hardware replacement, and console access.
- Site Verification: Capture site photos or provide visual confirmation of equipment status during remote troubleshooting, supporting customers with visual feedback and status updates.
Operational Support
- Asset Management: Maintain an accurate asset inventory, rack elevations, and patch panel documentation to ensure up-to-date records of all equipment and infrastructure.
- Shipping & Receiving: Assist with the inbound and outbound shipping processes, including handling RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) requests and coordination with vendors.
- Ticketing Systems & Logging: Ensure that all activities are logged and tracked in ticketing systems, with accurate timestamps and status updates for full accountability and traceability.
- Documentation Contribution: Contribute to the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs), MOPs, and emergency response documentation to ensure operational consistency and safety.
Security & Compliance
- Adherence to Security Protocols: Follow physical and remote security policies and procedures to safeguard the data center and its assets.
- Compliance Participation: Adhere to industry compliance frameworks, including SOC 2 Type 2, CSA 282, ISO 27001, and PCI-DSS, ensuring all activities meet the security and regulatory standards.
- Audit Assistance: Participate in audits and provide documentation and support for compliance verification.
On-call & After-Hours Support
- On-call Rotation: Be available to participate in a rotating on-call schedule, providing after-hours support for critical incidents to ensure minimal downtime and service disruption.
ABOUT YOU
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certifications (e.g., CompTIA A+, Network+, etc.) or a relevant degree preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in data center operations, NOC (Network Operations Center), or a technical support role with a solid understanding of infrastructure management.
Technical Skills:
- Data Center Infrastructure: Working knowledge of core data center systems such as power distribution (UPS, PDUs), cooling systems (HVAC), and physical security protocols.
- Cabling & Networking: Proficiency in fiber optic (SM/MM) and copper (Cat5e/6/6a) cabling, including installation, testing, fault isolation, and troubleshooting.
- Hardware Familiarity: Hands-on experience with server hardware (e.g., Dell, HPE, Supermicro), networking equipment (e.g., Cisco, Arista, Juniper), and serial console access.
- Tool Usage: Comfortable with data center tooling, including ticketing systems, DCIM software, cable testers (e.g., Fluke), and basic CLI (Command Line Interface) commands.
Compliance & Security Knowledge:
- Familiarity with industry compliance frameworks including SOC 2 Type 2, CSA 282, ISO 27001, and PCI-DSS.
- Understanding of data center security practices and the ability to implement and adhere to security policies and procedures to protect the infrastructure.
Physical & Operational Capabilities:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks in raised floor environments, working safely and efficiently.
- Comfortable with working in tight spaces and elevated areas as required by the infrastructure setup.
Problem-Solving & Communication:
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, capable of diagnosing complex technical issues and implementing corrective actions.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Availability:
- Flexibility to participate in rotating on-call schedules, including evenings and weekends, to provide continuous support for data center operations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certifications in data center operations, network infrastructure, electrical systems, or HVAC.
- Experience working in compliance-focused environments with SOC 2 Type 2, CSA 282, ISO 27001, and PCI-DSS standards.
ABOUT THE WORK ENVIRONMENT
This role is onsite at our HPC location in Kelowna, BC. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
This role has a pay range of $45,000 - $65,000 CAD.
