ABOUT THE ROLE

The Substation Designer, reporting to the Senior Vice President, Development, will play a pivotal role in designing and developing electrical substation layouts and systems to support Hut 8's expanding infrastructure. This position involves creating detailed design documents, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality substation projects.​

Some of the key responsibilities you should expect are the following:

Substation Design & Drafting ​

  • Develop comprehensive 2D and 3D design drawings for substation physical layout, general arrangements, and elevation views. ​
  • Create detailed electrical schematics, one-line, three-line, and wiring diagrams for substation equipment. ​
  • Design grounding plans, conduit layouts, control building arrangements, and cable routing for new and existing substations. ​
  • Ensure all drawings and designs comply with NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and other applicable industry standards.

Equipment & Infrastructure Design​

  • Design and integrate substation components such as circuit breakers, transformers, bus work, relays, switchgear, disconnects, and capacitor banks.​
  • Coordinate substation protection and control (P&C) schemes, relay panel arrangements, and SCADA integration.​
  • Develop material take-offs (MTOs) and bill of materials (BOMs) for procurement and construction.​

Software & Digital Modeling​

  • Utilize AutoCAD and/or MicroStation to develop high-quality construction drawings.​
  • Work with GIS-based design tools for substation and transmission layout planning.​
  • Assist in 3D modeling and visualization of substation designs for engineering review and client presentations.​

Quality Control & Compliance​

  • Perform design quality checks and constructability reviews, ensuring adherence to project specifications and safety requirements.​
  • Review vendor drawings and equipment specifications to ensure proper integration into substation designs.​
  • Maintain document control and revision tracking, ensuring design consistency across all project phases.​

Project Collaboration & Coordination​

  • Work closely with engineers, project managers, and field teams to coordinate substation design requirements.​
  • Support real-time problem-solving and design modifications during substation construction and commissioning.​
  • Communicate regularly with internal and external stakeholders to align design deliverables with project timelines and budget expectations.​

Field & Construction Support​

  • Conduct site visits and field verifications to validate existing infrastructure and ensure accurate design execution.​
  • Provide technical support during construction, working with contractors and engineers to address design-related challenges.​
  • Assist in commissioning support by verifying design implementation and making necessary adjustments.​

Process Improvement & Standardization​

  • Contribute to the development and refinement of Hut 8's substation design standards and best practices.​
  • Identify opportunities to automate design processes and enhance efficiency through digital tools.​
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes affecting substation design.​

ABOUT YOU

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Drafting/Design, Engineering Technology,​
  • Electrical Engineering, or a related field preferred.​
  • Strong understanding of substation physical design, including general arrangements, equipment layouts, conduit plans, grounding, and cable routing.​
  • Experience working with medium-voltage (MV) and high-voltage (HV) substations (e.g., 34.5kV to 345kV).​
  • 3-5 years of experience in electrical substation design, transmission, or power distribution projects.​
  • Familiarity with protection and control (P&C) design, including relay panel arrangements, wiring diagrams, and schematic development.​
  • Hands-on experience with electrical drawing development, including one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and bill of materials (BOM).​
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation for creating substation layout and detailed design drawings.​
  • Experience using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) tools, Bentley Substation, or similar utility mapping software is a plus.​
  • Working knowledge of ETAP, SKM, or similar electrical system modeling software is beneficial.​
  • Strong understanding of NEC, NESC, IEEE, NEMA, and ANSI standards for substation design.​
  • Knowledge of utility permitting, zoning regulations, and environmental impact assessments related to substation projects.​
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for interfacing with internal stakeholders, vendors, and external consultants.​
  • Exceptional organizational skills, detail-oriented mindset, and ability to execute projects efficiently.​
  • Willingness to travel to project sites across North America.​
  • Must pass a motor vehicle check.

ABOUT THE WORK ENVIRONMENT

This role will require you to be on-site in Amarillo for 2 months. After that, you can work remotely from the state of Texas with frequent travel to various sites across the state. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
