Senior Electrical Engineer, Medium-Voltage & Low-Voltage Systems
ABOUT HUT 8
Imagine the ultimate destination for those who want to work at the cutting edge of technology, energy, and infrastructure. Hut 8 is on a mission to build and operate some of the world’s largest data centers for next-generation computing workloads, including AI, Colocation, Cloud, and Bitcoin Mining. We are proud to offer interesting and challenging opportunities for individuals who want to build teams, solve problems, and make an impact from day one. If you’re an ambitious individual looking for a career that is as rewarding as it is challenging, you’ve come to the right place.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Senior Electrical Engineer specializing in MV and LV system design, you will be responsible for designing electrical systems that power and support high-density facilities. You will ensure that conductor sizes are optimized for performance and efficiency, accounting for various support mediums (e.g., cable trays, conduits) and environmental factors.
You will work closely with other engineers and construction teams to implement robust electrical infrastructure, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety requirements. This role reports to the Senior Vice President, Development.
Some of the key responsibilities you should expect are the following:
- Medium Voltage Design: Design, analyze, and optimize medium voltage (MV) overhead lines and underground systems, ensuring reliable power distribution and adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
- Low Voltage Design: Design and optimize high-density low voltage (LV) systems to ensure proper electrical distribution, particularly in data centers and similar facilities.
- Conductor Sizing: Size electrical conductors (both MV and LV) based on load requirements, considering factors such as cable tray spacing, conduit installation, temperature derating, and voltage drop.
- Voltage Drop & Derating Analysis: Perform detailed voltage drop calculations, considering cable lengths, load demands, and environmental factors (e.g., temperature, insulation material), to ensure system efficiency and reliability.
- Support Mediums: Design and select appropriate support mediums (cable trays, conduits, ducts) for various conductor installations, optimizing for space and ensuring the integrity of the electrical system.
- Cable Tray Design: Ensure proper layout and design of cable trays for safe and efficient conductor placement, considering accessibility for maintenance, load-bearing capacity, and space optimization.
- System Coordination: Work closely with mechanical, civil, and MEP engineers to ensure alignment of electrical system designs with other infrastructure elements, particularly in high-density environments.
- Construction Support: Provide technical guidance during the construction phase to ensure designs are accurately implemented, addressing any site-specific challenges or modifications.
- Standards & Regulations: Ensure all designs comply with relevant electrical codes, safety standards (e.g., NEC, IEEE, IEC), and environmental regulations.
ABOUT YOU
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in medium voltage and low voltage electrical system design, with a focus on conductor sizing, voltage drop analysis, and support medium design.
- Expertise in designing MV (overhead and underground) systems and high-density LV systems for industrial or data center applications.
- Experience in conductor sizing for different types of support mediums, including cable trays, conduits, and ducts, while accounting for derating factors and voltage drop.
- Proficiency with electrical design software (e.g., AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar tools) and familiarity with power system analysis and design software.
- Strong knowledge of voltage drop calculations, derating factors, and environmental impacts on electrical systems.
- Familiarity with relevant standards (e.g., NEC, IEC, IEEE) for MV and LV systems, as well as local building codes and regulations.
- Experience in designing electrical systems for high-density environments (data centers, industrial facilities, etc.) is highly desirable.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and optimize designs based on real-world conditions.
