Senior Creative Technologist, Experiences
Company Description
Hyperquake is an independent creative strategy, branding, and experience design marketing agency founded in 1986, with locations in Cincinnati, Salt Lake City, and Brooklyn. We specialize in strategic innovation, branded experiences, and scaling organizations for growth, working with companies ranging from small startups to global enterprises. Hyperquake builds ambitious brands and experiences for those eager to activate a vision.
Position Description
We are seeking a skilled, well-rounded Senior Creative Technologist to help build our interactive experiences. This is a senior, hands-on role focused on technical execution and craft across a broad range of technologies—real-time graphics, interactive installations, and the software that powers them. You will build immersive and interactive experiences for our high-profile clients across enterprise, public, and cultural spaces, and help mentor more junior technologists along the way.
While this is not primarily a web-development role, web technologies run throughout our work: the content management systems that drive our experiences are built on web stacks, and the on-screen user interfaces within our installations are frequently built with web technologies. Comfort working in these tools is important, even though the end product is an interactive experience rather than a website.
We value versatility—someone comfortable moving between real-time graphics, installations, and the web-based layers that support them—over deep specialization in any single area. Some travel will be required for on-site installation support (roughly 15–20%).
Primary Responsibilities
-
Serve as a lead builder on assigned interactive projects, delivering work to a high standard of technical excellence, performance, and stability.
-
Build primarily on a core tech stack including Unity, Unreal Engine, TouchDesigner, and web technologies.
-
Build and integrate the on-screen user interfaces within experiences using web stacks (e.g., HTML/CSS/JavaScript and a framework such as React).
-
Work with web-based content management systems that drive, update, and manage experience content.
-
Contribute to technical decisions on system architecture, hardware specification, and deployment for complex, multi-sensor, and multi-display installations.
-
Own the technical delivery of your assigned work, ensuring it ships on time, within budget, and to a high quality standard.
-
Contribute to estimates, technical specifications, and feasibility assessments.
-
Help identify and flag technical risk on interactive installations.
-
Mentor junior Creative Technologists and interns, sharing craft, patterns, and best practices.
-
Collaborate closely with Design, Production, Fabrication, AV Integration, and Client teams.
-
Communicate technical concepts and limitations clearly to non-technical teammates and clients.
-
Travel to client sites and venues to support installation, integration, calibration, and final quality control.
-
Explore and apply emerging technologies, including AI and agent-driven workflows, to push the work further.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Proactive, comfortable with ambiguity, and flexible in the face of shifting client needs
-
A passion for technology, culture, and building bespoke brand experiences
-
Agency or design studio experience preferred
-
Full-stack web development experience (e.g., JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Node.js, APIs, and databases) is a great skill to have.
-
Familiarity with agent-driven and AI-assisted workflows (e.g., MCP servers, LLM tooling).
-
Hands-on experience with XR/spatial computing technologies and deployment.
-
Understanding of deployment pipelines and version control (Git).
-
Experience with back-end technologies (e.g., Django, Node.js).
-
Comfort with physical computing (Arduino, sensors, projection mapping) is a plus.
-
Ability to work Eastern time zone hours.
Experience You Will Bring
-
At least 5 years of experience in software-based creative technology, with a strong portfolio showcasing immersive, interactive, and large-scale work.
-
Deep production experience in at least 2 of the following: Unity, Unreal Engine, TouchDesigner, Web (e.g., Three.js, WebGL).
-
Working knowledge of web technologies (HTML/CSS/JavaScript and a framework such as React) for building UI within experiences and working with web-based CMS platforms.
-
A diverse portfolio showcasing hands-on delivery of interactive experiences involving sensor input, data visualization, and real-time graphics.
-
Experience mentoring or guiding more junior technologists.
-
Comfort working with external contractors, fabricators, and AV vendors on physical installations.
-
Proficiency in programming languages such as C#, C++, or JavaScript.
-
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Interactive Media, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
-
Application requirements: a PDF of a resume and portfolio highlights (links to live demos, interactive projects, or a code repository are strongly encouraged).
