AI Engineer/ Principal AI Engineer

Remote

Hyphenate helps companies write better proposals and SOWs, faster. Our AI-powered software allows users to start the solution documentation process as editors; Hyphenate helps users get the best solutions documented and sent to clients 30 times faster. Hyphenate is a Seed-stage startup firm and a member of the High Alpha portfolio.

Hyphenate is looking to add an AI Engineer to our growing team. This individual will deliver value to our users with AI solutions. Partnering closely with our software engineering team and product designer, the AI Engineer will build AI solutions to power some of the most impactful features on our product roadmap.

The GenerativeAI space is moving fast and we know there is amazing talent across all levels in this space, which is why we’re open to bringing someone on as either an AI Engineer or a Principal AI Engineer. The responsibilities of the role, and the experience we’re looking for, are tied to the title.

What you’ll do:

  • Conceptualize, develop, and deploy AI solutions to power features and product enhancements on our roadmap
  • Optimize AI algorithms and models for efficiency, accuracy, and scalability, leveraging best practices and emerging technologies in the field
  • Work closely with our software engineering team to integrate machine learning models, algorithms, and data pipelines into the backend infrastructure
  • Support the design, architecture, and implementation of scalable backend systems and APIs that support AI-powered functionalities, ensuring high performance, reliability, and security
  • Engage in a mix of research (approximately 35%) and engineering (approximately 65%); self-manage research initiatives, both designing the research methodology and acceptance criteria.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, advancements, and emerging technologies in AI, machine learning, and backend development, and evaluate their potential impact on our product roadmap

Additional Responsibilities for a Principal AI Engineer:

  • Partner with the CTO and CEO to help build the product roadmap; leveraging your AI expertise, and bringing product feature ideas to the roadmap vs. simply executing roadmap items.
  • Lead, develop, and communicate the AI strategy; this includes determining what improvements can be made, in what timeframe, and with what requirements (for example: does the code need to change, do we need more data, or does AI need to advance more generally before we can solve a specific problem).
  • Play an active role in the software development process; participate in strategy conversations about our backend software development, bringing an AI lens to the software conversation.
  • LEAD the design, architecture, and implementation of scalable backend systems and APIs that support AI-powered functionalities, ensuring high performance, reliability, and security
  • Engage in a mix of research (approximately 50%) and engineering (approximately 50%); self-manage research initiatives both designing the research methodology as well as acceptance criteria.
  • Represent Hyphenate in the market as an AI expert (sitting on panels, giving presentations, and elevating the Hyphenate brand through your subject matter expertise)
  • Actively engage in customer discovery, taking a hands-on approach to engage in conversations with customers

Experience we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, AI, Data Science, Machine Learning, Applied Mathematics or a similar field of study
  • 3+ years of experience in data science or machine learning engineering within a software company, ideally working on integrating AI into software platforms.
  • Expert understanding of LLMs including prompt engineering, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), fine-tuning and training
  • Experience with models, such as LLaMA and OpenAPI GPT
  • Experience with LLM frameworks, like LangChain and LlamaIndex, is a plus
  • Strong knowledge of SQL, NoSQL Graph, and/or Vector databases
  • Solid understanding of machine learning concepts, algorithms, and techniques
  • Strong proficiency with data and ML-adjacent Python libraries (pandas, scikit-learn, etc)
  • Proficient understanding of typical AI tooling ecosystem including knowledge and experience of Kubernetes, MLOps and AIOps tools
  • Passion for AI: You geek out on generative AI, data science and machine learning theory and industry developments
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, including customer teams

Additional experience we’re looking for in a Principal Engineer:

  • PhD in Computer Science, AI, Data Science, Machine Learning, Applied Mathematics, or a similar field of study
  • 5+ years of experience in data science or machine learning engineering, including 4+ years in software engineering with a recent focus on LLMs and generative AI technologies.
  • Extremely strong communication skills; can represent the Hyphenate brand with customers, investors, or the broader AI community

Package

The compensation range for the AI Engineer role is $135,000-$165,000 (based on experience). The compensation for the Principal AI Engineer role is $170,000-200,000 (based on experience). Both roles include:

  • Great benefits, including healthcare, dental, and vision coverage for employees
  • Access to Bereave for you and your family
  • Equity grants
  • Monthly equipment stipend to cover laptop, monitor, and any software or equipment you may need

Why join Hyphenate?

We’re an early-stage company with a dedicated and hardworking team. We care about our customers, our investors, and each other. We have a high-trust environment and are a group of adults who treat each other as trusted adults. The opportunities for future advancement grow as we grow this organization: we control our own destiny and the world is our oyster. We have five core values that we hire and fire by (they’re not just words on a wall). These include:

  • Hardest work, best work. A challenge is motivating, even when it’s a little scary. Working through hard challenges is what makes us grow.
  • Speed over perfection. We move fast and have a bias for action. We’re quick to spot issues, pivot without hesitation, and move quickly to drive forward. We tolerate the occasional mistake in exchange for speed.
  • Face challenges head-on. We’re not afraid of hard conversations and we face challenges head on. We say the things that feel uncomfortable to say to address the issue and get to the other side of the problem. We do so with positive intent and an open mind.
  • Humble in abundance, optimistic in adversity. In good times, we remind ourselves (and each other) that we’re never done learning, growing, and improving. In hard times, we force ourselves (and each other) to keep the long-term vision in mind: failure is a timeline issue: with iteration and effort, you can always find a way to success.
  • Diverse perspective, unified success. We seek out diversity because diverse teams are the most successful teams. We have a high tolerance for working alongside others who come with different perspectives, backgrounds, and areas of expertise. We approach every interaction with team members as an opportunity to see something in a different light.

Hyphenate is an equal opportunity employer, and we value diversity at our company. We don’t discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

Form CC-305

OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
