Intellectual Property Associate

Ice Miller LLP is seeking a highly motivated Intellectual Property Associate with at least 2–3 years of legal experience to join our team in our Chicago, Washington D.C., Indianapolis or Philadelphia office. Successful candidates will have experience in patent prosecution and a strong technical background in Electrical Engineering (EE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), or Computer Science (CS). This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career associate to work on sophisticated patent matters for high-caliber clients across a broad range of technologies. Candidates must have excellent written and oral communication skills, a team-oriented mentality, and be a motivated self-starter with strong law school credentials and references. 

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications across a variety of technical disciplines
  • Conduct patentability, freedom-to-operate, infringement, and validity analyses
  • Advise clients on IP strategy, portfolio management, and patent enforcement
  • Support IP litigation teams with technical analysis, discovery, and expert coordination when needed
  • Collaborate with attorneys and staff across the firm’s IP and litigation practices
  • Stay current on USPTO procedures, relevant case law, and global IP developments

Requirements:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school with strong academic credentials
  • At least 2-3 years of experience practicing law in a law firm or in-house legal department with a focus on patent prosecution
  • Active law license in state of practice or eligibility to waive in
  • USPTO registration required
  • Undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science; relevant industry or technical work experience a strong plus
  • Graduate degree in a technical field is not required but will be viewed favorably
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, excellent analytical skills 
  • Must have permanent authorization to work in the United States

  • The salary range for this position in Chicago and Philadelphia is $214,500 to $235,000 and in Washington DC is $225,000 to $250,000, based on experience, plus opportunities for discretionary and hours-based bonus
