In a Nutshell:

Design research is the cornerstone of our human-centered approach to design thinking.

The Design Research Operations team plays a critical role in helping shape research, empower teams, and find participants and experts to give our designers and clients unique perspectives on the problem we are designing for. They hold a broad view of our global research efforts and are able to help the community build better processes that enable us to push the edges of human-centered research.

We are especially excited to meet candidates with a background in fast-paced environments like creative agencies, large scale nonprofits, or startups. This position supports IDEO’s commitment to flexible work, while requiring proximity to one of our North American studios.

Once here you will:

  • Develop and implement participant recruitment strategies aligned to diverse industries & project goals.
  • Create and execute on a recruiting plan for bespoke projects.
  • Readily utilize different ways of reaching people and screening for fit to each study, including targeted outreach via social channels; networking with relevant organizations; or working with external recruiting partners.
  • Apply your strong intuition and instincts while screening respondents to ensure they are appropriate for a particular project.
  • Provide an exceptional & non-extractive experience for those we learn from.
Meticulously manage logistics for a variety of research methods, including both  remote and in-person research sessions.
  • Uphold compliance with research ethics, privacy, and participant compensation protocols in accordance with industry best practices and the Little Book of Design Research Ethics.

As you grow within our organization - you’ll help build the future of Design Research Operations at IDEO, support the design and creation of resources—tools, assets and relationships—and find great people to participate in research and inspire design.

Qualifications / Experience:

  • 1–4 years of experience in research recruitment, research operations, nonprofit operations, community management or participant management.
  • Proficiency with recruitment tools such as dscout, user Interviews, or similar platforms.
  • Strong organization, attention to detail, and communication skills.
  • Comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Bonus: Knowledge of HIPAA guidelines and experience in health-related research.

What Makes a Great Fit:

We’re looking for someone who brings:

  • A collaborative, team-oriented approach to ambiguous work.
  • Clear, thoughtful communication and follow-through.

Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
