Role Overview
We are seeking a Staff Software Development Engineer (SDE-V) to join our growing infrastructure engineering team at ID.me. As an SDE-V, you’ll have the charter to focus on building the foundational Platform Services and Traffic Engineering capabilities that power our internal and external systems at scale.
ID.me is a platform company, embracing an API-first development strategy to ensure consistent, scalable, and reusable systems. As an SDE-V, you will lead the design and development of scalable infrastructure tools that abstract and expose capabilities from cloud platforms (such as AWS and GCP) and SaaS providers (Cloudflare), transforming them into reusable building blocks for our internal engineering teams. You will also be a key driver in evolving our traffic management architecture, taking ownership of key systems such as Envoy, Istio, Cloudflare, API Gateways, and cross-cloud networking strategies.
This role is based out of our Mountain View, CA office or Mclean, VA office, and requires full-time in-office attendance.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implement platform APIs and tools that expose cloud and SaaS services (e.g., GCP IAM, AWS EventBridge, Secrets Manager) in a consistent, secure, and developer-friendly way.
- Own end-to-end delivery of service orchestration layers and APIs that standardize provisioning, access control, observability, and lifecycle management for underlying cloud-native services.
- Architect and evolve the service mesh and API gateway infrastructure across multi-cloud environments using technologies such as Envoy, Istio, NGINX, and Cloudflare.
- Mentor and support junior engineers through code reviews, technical guidance, and pairing.
- Lead initiatives to optimize routing, failover, and ingress/egress strategies for performance, resilience, and cost.
- Develop tooling and automation for traffic observability, policy enforcement, and fine-grained access control.
- Set technical direction and mentor other engineers within the Infrastructure team and across engineering orgs.
- Partner with security, compliance, and developer experience teams to ensure platform services align with internal policies and standards.
- Drive adoption of platform services and traffic engineering best practices across engineering teams.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 8+ years of professional software development experience, with a strong focus on infrastructure, cloud services, or developer platforms.
- Proficiency in a modern programming language (e.g., Java, Go, Python, Ruby, JavaScript).
Preferred Qualifications
- Deep experience designing systems that integrate with AWS, GCP, and/or other major cloud providers.
- Expert knowledge in service mesh technologies (e.g., Istio, Linkerd), proxies (e.g., Envoy, NGINX), and API gateways.
- Strong understanding of CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Pulumi), and GitOps principles.
- Proven track record of technical leadership and driving large-scale platform initiatives.
- Experience with security compliance in enterprise environments (e.g., SOC2, FedRAMP).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially in technical contexts.
- Passion for mentorship, documentation, and elevating team performance.
- Understanding of production observability principles (logging, metrics, alerting).
- Demonstrated ownership of at least one significant project or feature from design through launch.
- Contributions to open-source projects in the infrastructure or traffic engineering space.
