Role Overview

ID.me is seeking a Software Engineer III to join the Developer Portal team, where we're building the self-service platform that enables organizations to rapidly integrate id.me

Identity proofing is fundamentally complex. Integrating an identity proofing flow requires many steps while meeting standards-body assurance requirements. The Developer Portal is the product that brings those pieces together for the external developer.

Today, much of that onboarding is still performed manually by in-house Solutions Consultants who have many other responsibilities. Our mission is to enable customers and their developers to register their application, configure their identity needs, test in a production-like sandbox, and launch to production all through a modern self-service experience.

This is a backend-leaning full-stack role. You will spend most of your time designing and building the services, APIs, and data models behind the portal — application registration, authorization, and the developer-facing APIs our customers integrate against. You'll also ship the user-facing surfaces of those services power, working in our Next.js and React frontend to take features all the way to the customer rather than handing them off at the API boundary.

You'll own features end-to-end: from API contract through database schema, deployment, and production operation. You'll take defined problems, coordinate across teams to land them safely, and grow into technical ownership of the systems you build.

Our backend services are primarily Java (Spring Boot) alongside legacy Ruby services powering identity, organizations, applications, and authorization. The frontend is a micro-frontend platform built with Next.js, React, and TypeScript. Previous Ruby experience is welcome but not required — we value engineers who are comfortable learning whatever technology the problem requires.

This position is based in our Mountain View, CA office five days per week.

Key Responsibilities

Build & Ship Self-Service Developer Features

Design and implement Developer Portal capabilities end-to-end — from API contract design through database schema, frontend integration, and deployment. Independently drive small-to-medium features, coordinating with adjacent teams where your work crosses service boundaries.

Own API Contracts & Data Models

Own the data models and REST API contracts for the capabilities you build, making deliberate decisions about backwards compatibility and versioning. Our customers integrate directly against these contracts, so changes must be additive and safe by default.

Authentication, Authorization & Identity

Build secure Developer Portal capabilities spanning OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, enterprise SSO, multi-tenant authorization, relationship-based access control, session management, credential management, and identity-aware application provisioning. Partner with our Identity, Organizations, Authorization, and Platform Engineering teams to evolve these capabilities without disrupting existing integrations.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Partner with Product, Design, Architecture, and platform teams to clarify requirements, surface risks early, and keep the developer experience coherent as the platform grows.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4+ years of professional software development experience building and operating production backend services. [Less for PhD, Master's]
  • Strong experience building backend services and REST APIs using a modern web framework such as Java (Spring Boot), Ruby on Rails, Node.js, or similar.
  • Deep experience with relational databases, including authoring complex SQL and performing safe schema migrations against production systems.
  • Experience designing REST API contracts, including versioning and backwards compatibility, and documenting them with OpenAPI or a similar specification.
  • Working proficiency with TypeScript and React — comfortable shipping customer-facing features through a modern frontend without requiring a frontend specialist to finish the work.
  • Working familiarity with authentication and authorization concepts such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, or related identity standards.
  • Demonstrated experience independently driving small-to-medium technical initiatives from definition through production, including cross-team coordination.
  • Proficiency with AI-assisted development tooling (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) and a commitment to an AI-first engineering culture that leverages these tools to improve software quality, testing, and engineering velocity.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience partnering across Product, Design, and Engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Has built developer experience as an explicit goal for example SDKs, API reference docs, quickstarts, sandbox or test environments, error messages and debugging surfaces, or self-serve onboarding flows and can speak to how it changed time-to-first-successful-integration for real external developers.
  • Experience building developer-facing platforms such as developer portals, API platforms, authentication platforms, cloud platforms, payments platforms, or other self-service developer experiences.
  • Experience with modern Java (21+) and Spring Boot in production codebases.
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL specifically, including graph-like or highly relational data models.
  • Experience with Next.js, or with micro-frontend architectures such as Webpack Module Federation.
  • Experience with enterprise identity standards including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML 2.0, or SCIM.
  • Experience with relationship-based authorization systems such as SpiceDB, OpenFGA, or Zanzibar-inspired architectures.
  • Experience with policy engines such as OPA or Cedar.
  • Experience performing feature-flag-driven migrations in customer-facing production systems.
  • Experience with OpenAPI tooling, docs-as-code, or SDK generation.
  • Familiarity with identity verification, fraud prevention, KYC/AML, or regulated identity systems.
  • Working knowledge of NIST 800-63 IAL/AAL guidelines.
  • Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform and cloud-native application development.
  • Experience with observability platforms such as OpenTelemetry, Honeycomb, Prometheus, and Sentry.
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks such as Playwright, Jest, or Cypress.
  • Startup or high-growth company background.

The annual base salary listed does not include a company bonus, incentive for sales roles, equity and benefits which will be determined based on experience, skills, education, relevant training, geographic location and role.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 07/31/2029

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
