Head of Engineering- Shanghai

About the Role

We are seeking a strategic and hands-on Head of Engineering to lead all IT department employees.

This role is critical in driving fast, high-quality software/Infra/AppSec delivery with a strong emphasis on A/B testing, experimentation, rapid go-to-market execution and cutting-edge AI-driven solutions. You will ensure that our technology stack, engineering culture, and quality processes enable us to iterate quickly, scale efficiently, and maintain a world-class eCommerce experience.

As a senior leader, you will work closely with cross-functional teams across product, design, data, QA, and business units to define and execute a technology roadmap that supports our aggressive growth and innovation goals. At the same time, you will oversee smooth running of the IT entire department operations, budget and cost, compliance in China, and support iHerb’s continuous growth in China. 

Key Responsibilities

1. Engineering & QA Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and scale a high-performing engineering and QA team across multiple domains.
  • Ensure seamless collaboration between development and QA teams to drive fast, high-quality releases.
  • Define and implement automated and manual testing strategies to support rapid feature rollouts.
  • Oversee A/B testing frameworks to drive data-driven decision-making and optimize customer experience.

2. Fast-Paced Delivery & Quality Excellence

  • Drive a culture of rapid experimentation, iterative development, and continuous delivery.
  • Develop and implement go-to-market testing strategies to ensure seamless feature launches.
  • Establish engineering best practices, including test-driven development (TDD), CI/CD, and performance testing.
  • Optimize release cycles to ensure high-velocity, high-quality deployments without compromising stability.

3. AI & GenAI-Driven Innovation in eCommerce

  • Leverage Generative AI (GenAI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies to enhance personalization, search relevance, customer interactions, and automation in eCommerce.
  • Collaborate with Data Science and AI teams to build and deploy AI-powered solutions for recommendations, dynamic pricing, fraud detection, chatbot automation, and intelligent content generation.
  • Ensure seamless integration of GenAI-powered features into our core platform while maintaining scalability and reliability.

4. Technical Strategy & Scalability

  • Own the technical roadmap for the Shanghai Tech team, ensuring scalability and reliability.
  • Architect and optimize systems for high availability, performance, and security in a high-traffic environment.
  • Leverage emerging technologies such as AI-driven testing, machine learning, and cloud-based QA automation.
  1. 5. Cross-Team Collaboration & Alignment
  • Partner with Product, UX, and Business teams to define, test, and launch new features efficiently.
  • Work closely with global engineering teams to maintain consistency in tools, processes, and engineering culture.
  • Ensure smooth cross-functional collaboration between Shanghai and other regional/global offices.

6. People & Culture Development

  • Attract, hire, and retain top talent in Shanghai Office.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, agility, and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct coaching for managers if you realize the  problems, guide and improve the employees’ various skills.

 

7. Operational & Testing Excellence

  • Implement data-driven decision-making by using A/B testing, feature flags, and real-time monitoring.
  • Define clear and measurable KPIs and OKRs for the teams to improve speed and quality. 
  • Drive a strong post-launch monitoring and rollback strategy to mitigate risks.

 

  1. Cost control 
  • Responsible for entire department's budget and costs, save and control costs of the entire department.

 

  1. Audit:
  • Support compliance audits for finance and IT to ensure all processes are compliant and updated, with dedicated personnel managing all documents and taking responsibility for the results. 

 

  1. Others
  • Assist GM in attending necessary various meetings. Responsible for all matters related to the IT department, including but not limited to the use of various IT certificates, vendor selection, contract renewals with suppliers, office network situation, support HR issues etc. to ensure the smooth operation of the entire department. 

 

Qualifications & Experience

  • 10+ years of engineering experience, with at least 5 years in leadership roles in eCommerce, fintech, or SaaS.
  • Proven experience leading large engineering and QA teams (100+ engineers, including testing teams and infra).
  • Strong expertise in A/B testing, experimentation platforms, and rapid go-to-market testing strategies.
  • Experience with(or exposure to) AI/ML and GenAI applications in eCommerce, including recommendation systems, chatbot automation, and AI-driven content generation.
  • Deep knowledge of scalable architectures, microservices, cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), and always-on platforms.
  • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and high-reliability deployment strategies.
  • Strong analytical, strategic, and problem-solving skills, with a data-driven mindset.

  • Excellent communication skills in English and Mandarin.
