Calibration and FAI Technician

Position Summary

The Calibration and FAI Technician is an entry-level role that supports IEM’s measurement and quality programs by performing foundational calibration activities and First Article Inspections (FAI). Working under close supervision and the direction of the Calibration and FAI Manager, this role calibrates and tracks Measurement & Test Equipment (M&TE), completes straightforward dimensional inspections, assists with First Article Inspection Reports (FAIR), and maintains accurate, traceable records. The technician builds core metrology, inspection, and drawing-interpretation skills while helping ensure that equipment, components, and assemblies meet applicable specifications and quality standards.

The ideal candidate is a mechanically inclined, hands-on, and detail-oriented individual who is eager to build a career in metrology and quality inspection. They bring experience using precision measuring instruments, the administrative discipline to manage schedules and records accurately, and the communication skills to work effectively with tool owners, production teams, and other departments. Prior calibration experience, formal metrology education, and familiarity with ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 17025, or AS9102 are valued.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform routine M&TE inspections and calibrations under supervision in accordance with IEM policies, procedures, and applicable quality standards.
• Use, inspect, and perform basic repairs on M&TE under the guidance of senior staff; identify equipment failures or issues and escalate as needed.
• Maintain the calibration recall schedule, coordinating due dates to keep equipment in tolerance and in service.
• Recall, collect, and return M&TE to and from tool owners and departments across the site in a timely manner.
• Process new M&TE into the calibration system, including registering equipment, assigning identification, and preparing calibration labels and records.
• Serve as a customer-facing point of contact for routine calibration requests; communicate schedules, upcoming due dates, and overdue status to tool owners and departments.
• Read and interpret basic engineering blueprints and drawings to identify required measurements and inspection criteria, with guidance as needed.
• Perform routine First Article Inspections (FAI) on components and assemblies under supervision, ensuring conformance to design specifications and applicable quality standards.
• Make accurate dimensional measurements using precision measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, pin gauges, radius gauges, and protractors.
• Assist in producing First Article Inspection Reports (FAIR) in accordance with AS9102 and customer requirements.
• Maintain accurate, complete, and traceable calibration and FAI records; support internal and external audits by retrieving records as requested.
• Analyze and interpret basic calibration and inspection data to identify issues or trends; provide calibration and FAI status updates and escalate concerns to senior staff.
• Support continuous improvement by flagging issues and following established procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Calibration and FAI Manager.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• At least 6 months of experience using precision measuring equipment or performing calibration, inspection, or quality work in a manufacturing environment required; formal metrology education may substitute for experience.
• General knowledge of precision measuring equipment, including physical, mechanical, electrical, and electronic devices; experience with torque and/or force calibration is a plus.
• Basic working knowledge of dimensional measuring instruments including tape measures, calipers, micrometers, pin gauges, radius gauges, and protractors.
• Developing ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints and technical drawings.
• Familiarity with ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 17025, and AS9102 standards is a plus.
• Proficiency with the Microsoft Office 365 suite and accurate data-entry skills.
• Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, organizational skills, and time-management skills.
• Good verbal and written communication skills; able to work effectively and diplomatically with tool owners and other departments.

Workplace Conditions (Optional)

• Mix of climate-controlled office and non-climate-controlled manufacturing environment.
• Exposure to excessive heat and cold, wet/humid conditions, noise and vibration, dust, and fumes.
• Sitting approximately 40% of the time; walking and standing approximately 60% of the time.

Physical Demands (Optional)

• Frequently lift up to 50 pounds when collecting and returning M&TE and performing inspection activities.
• Must be able to bend, squat, crawl, and climb as needed in the manufacturing environment.
• Long periods of close work reviewing engineering drawings, calibration records, and fine print; ability to detect small or detailed items.
• Handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

[Comp Range: $29.33/hr - $31.25/hr]
