About the role:
Industrious is redefining what it means to create inspiring, flexible workplaces. We blend hospitality, design, and operational excellence to deliver environments where people and businesses thrive. As we expand our portfolio of flex offerings, we’re seeking a Director of Design to join our New Ventures Team—someone who can dream big, experiment boldly, and help us shape the future of work.
We’re looking for a visionary who thrives on standing up new concepts, exploring uncharted territory, and experimenting with workplace design. You’ll collaborate directly with end users and product development teammates to create bespoke offerings that expand and enhance the Industrious portfolio.
While this role is not about repeating the same project twice, your expertise will help us scale the most promising ideas and ensure our bold visions come to life. You’ll support other design managers and product development as we test, learn, and refine new approaches.
This role reports directly to the Head of Global Design and will be based in either New York City or Austin, TX.
What You’ll Do:
- Narrative Creation: Sketch high-level design narratives and distill strategic placemaking ideas into compelling visual and written stories.
- Project Leadership: Oversee select projects from schematic design through construction administration and launch.
- Strategic Planning: Collaborate with Real Estate, Operations, and product development on concepting, programming, blocking plans, and test fits.
- FF&E Oversight: Specify furniture, accessories, artwork, and greenery; manage quality and vendor outputs.
- Operational Support: Collaborate with our Tenant Experience and Operations team to evolve hospitality service elements at the intersection of service and physical environments.
- Cross-Functional Coordination: Work seamlessly with Construction, Real Estate, Operations, and product development teams, as well as external consultants and vendors.
- Process Improvement: Identify and implement opportunities to enhance design workflows and efficiency.
- Brand Advocacy: Champion our design vision, ensuring product standards and brand integrity.
What We’re Looking For:
- Experience: 10-15 years leading design teams, working with end users, with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Interior Design.
- Expertise: Proven track record in projects that blend hospitality, residential, and workplace design.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam; strong grasp of building codes and construction documentation.
- Communication: Exceptional ability to articulate complex design ideas to diverse audiences.
- Project Management: Ability to strategically manage and prioritize multiple complex projects.
- Collaboration: Comfortable working in a virtual, distributed team environment.
- Values: Commitment to integrity, teamwork, and ownership.
- Travel: Willingness to travel within the US for site visits, project launches and team events.
Compensation:
The annual base compensation range for this role is between $170,000 and $180,000. The successful candidate's actual base compensation will be based upon a variety of factors, including but not limited to work experience, job-related knowledge, skills, and professional qualifications. You will also be eligible for an annual 15% bonus and participation in our long-term incentive program.
Base and bonus compensation are just two components of Industrious’ total compensation package for this role. Other great perks and benefits include heavily subsidized healthcare plans, generous paid time off, wellness programs, professional development grants, 401k plan, and many other benefits, subject to applicable eligibility criteria and company policies.
Equal Employment Opportunity:
Industrious is an equal opportunity employer that values diversity. We have a long-standing commitment to providing equal employment opportunity to all qualified applicants regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, veteran status, political belief, or any other basis protected by applicable law.
