Field Service Engineer – Semiconductor Metrology 

£36,000 – £45,000 + EMI Share Options + Private Healthcare + Pension 

This role does require a willingness to travel for extended periods at short notice to our global and EU operations as required.

Are you an engineer or physicist who enjoys solving complex technical problems in the field? 

We're looking for a Field Service Engineer to support the installation, maintenance and optimisation of advanced semiconductor metrology systems used by leading global technology manufacturers. 

This is a hands-on role combining customer-facing engineering, fault finding and international travel. You'll work with highly advanced electromechanical systems, helping customers maximise system performance while building trusted technical partnerships around the world.

What you'll be doing 

  • Installing, commissioning and upgrading advanced metrology systems at customer facilities worldwide 
  • Delivering preventative maintenance and corrective repair activities 
  • Diagnosing and resolving complex electromechanical, optical and system-level faults 
  • Supporting customers remotely and on-site to maximise uptime and performance 
  • Training and mentoring distributors and customer service teams 
  • Monitoring system performance and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement 
  • Gathering customer feedback and collaborating with engineering teams to improve products 
  • Supporting production, test and commissioning activities at our Abingdon headquarters when required 
  • Contributing to the development of a scalable, world-class customer support function 

Ideal background 

We're particularly interested in engineers with experience in: 

  • Semiconductor equipment or semiconductor manufacturing environments 
  • Semiconductor metrology or process control equipment 
  • Scientific instruments or analytical systems 
  • Optical, laser or photonics systems 
  • Precision electromechanical equipment 
  • Vacuum, automation or high-tech manufacturing systems 

Essential experience 

  • Installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of complex technical equipment 
  • Diagnosing faults across electrical, mechanical and software-controlled systems 
  • Working directly with customers to resolve technical challenges 
  • Managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced technical environment 
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills 
  • Ability to travel internationally on a regular basis as the operation requires

Nice to have 

  • Semiconductor industry experience 
  • AFM, microscopy or metrology systems knowledge 
  • Lasers, optics or fibre-optic technologies 
  • Networking and software configuration experience 
  • Experience working within a scale-up or high-growth technology business 
  • High-voltage system experience 

Qualifications 

  • Degree in Engineering, Physics or a related discipline 

or 

  • Equivalent technical experience gained through apprenticeship, military service, field engineering or hands-on industry experience

Location and work pattern:
