Automation Engineer III

As an Automation Engineer, you will collaborate with scientists, software engineers, and microscopy engineers to build high-quality automated systems and protocols. Reporting to the Director of Process Engineering, you'll help advance insitro's high-throughput arrayed and pooled screening processes—an essential capability of our Cellular Machine Learning (CellML) Platform.
In this role, you'll:
- Develop and improve complex automation workflows on workstations and large-scale integrated systems.
- Define and perform instrument qualification processes (IQ/OQ/PQ)
- Support workflow analysis, identify bottlenecks and highlight areas for improvement
- Support the lab teams in troubleshooting their workflows and methods. Provide root cause analysis
- Develop software to integrate automation software with LIMS
- Prepare and review design documents and participate in code reviews
- Develop device drivers to facilitate workcell integration
- Gain exposure to a wide range of technologies and approaches, broadening your technical toolkit
- Contribute directly to insitro's mission, while shaping both our culture and our scientific outcomes
This is an onsite role based in our South San Francisco headquarters, expected to be in the office five days per week. #LI-Onsite

About You
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Robotics, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Software or Bioengineering, or Physics, Chemistry or Biology. 2+ years of relevant work experience
- You are conscientious about your commitments to your team, maintaining best practices while prioritizing team goals
- You enjoy working together with scientific partners to iterate through solutions and support high quality data generation
- You are comfortable learning and supporting diverse automation equipment (e.g., liquid handlers, robotic arms, plate readers, plate washers etc)
- You have experience automating scientific workflows (ex. Genomic Screening)
- Proficiency in Python, C# (or similar programming language)
Compensation & Benefits at insitro
Our target starting salary for successful US-based applicants for this role is $120,000 - $130,000. To determine starting pay, we consider multiple job-related factors including a candidate's skills, education and experience, market demand, business needs, and internal parity. We may also adjust this range in the future based on market data.
This role is eligible for participation in our Annual Performance Bonus Plan (based on company targets by role level and annual company performance) and our Equity Incentive Plan, subject to the terms of those plans and associated policies.
