About the Role

As our VP of Engineering, you will be a key partner to the CTO, responsible for both the technical health and operational excellence of our software engineering organization. This is a pivotal role for a builder who is excited to lead a high-performing team while establishing the processes, systems, and engineering culture that will define our next phase of growth.

This role requires a balance of strategic vision and a hands-on, tactical approach. You will be responsible for scaling the software team from 14 to 23 engineers in the first year, while also leading the implementation of a new microservices architecture, modern CI/CD pipelines, and improved developer experience.

You will lead the teams responsible for our applications, integrations, infrastructure, and quality assurance, and will be a key partner to our Head of Product and hardware engineering leaders.

What You'll Do

  • Build and scale a world-class team: Own the strategy and execution of organizational growth, scaling the team significantly in year one. Grow strong engineering leadership by coaching and developing managers. Attract, hire, and onboard top-tier talent while fostering a culture of psychological safety, high performance, and continuous learning.
  • Champion technical excellence: Drive architectural improvements, including moving from a monolith toward services, establishing consistent APIs, and building a robust testing strategy. Build new features using modern services and CI/CD to reduce complexity and ensure scalability, while laying the foundation for long-term growth. Instill best practices for testing, documentation, and security, and create a developer experience where engineers can ship confidently in minutes, not months.
  • Drive operational excellence: Establish and enforce a culture of high performance and reliability, enabling us to ship code and iterate with speed. You will own the improvement of key metrics like developer velocity, system uptime, and Mean Time to Resolution (MTTR).
  • Improve developer processes: Mature our Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) by introducing project visibility, documentation, and cross-functional communication. You will introduce a modern approach to planning, moving from reactive “firefighting” to deliberate, predictable delivery, drawing from the best of Agile, Kanban, and ScaleUp practices.
  • Lead with impact: Serve as a partner to the CTO, Head of Product, and hardware leaders to solve complex challenges unique to a dual hardware/software company. Provide clarity, direction, and technical judgment to help Inspiren scale successfully.

What You Bring

  • Proven experience in a high-growth environment, ideally both at an early-stage startup (demonstrating adaptability and scrappiness) and at a scale-up (Series C/D through IPO) where you’ve seen “great” at scale.
  • A strong balance of strategic vision and a hands-on, tactical approach to problem-solving.
  • Prior experience leading software teams with a background in scaling infrastructure and improving operational excellence.
  • Expertise in backend platforms and event-driven architecture, microservices architecture and a passion for improving developer experience (DevEx).
  • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines that enable rapid deploys, reliable rollbacks, and test automation at scale.
  • Demonstrated experience ensuring security and compliance in a regulated environment (SOC2, HIPAA), driving secure coding practices, conducting threat modeling, and managing cloud security audits.

Bonus:

  • Experience with hardware/software integration, specifically with embedded systems or IoT devices.
  • Familiarity with AI, Computer Vision, ML, MLOps.

Details

  • The annual salary range for this role is $275,000 - 300,000 + benefits (including medical, dental, and vision)
  • Flexible PTO
  • Location: Remote, US or Canada. NYC preferred.
  • Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender perception or identity, national origin, age, marital status, protected veteran status, or disability status.
