We are looking for an exceptional Lab Manager / (Senior) Research Associate to serve as the operational backbone of our combined biology and chemistry laboratory. 

 

About the Role 

We’re seeking a highly organized, hands-on scientist to fill a dual role as Lab Manager and Senior Research Associate. You will own the day-to-day operations of our biology and chemistry lab while also contributing directly to our drug discovery programs at the bench. 

 

You’ll play a key role in ensuring our scientists have everything they need to do their best work — from a well-stocked, well-organized lab environment to a culture of safety and operational excellence.

You will 

Lab and Office Operations & Management 

  • Oversee operations of a biology and chemistry laboratory, ensuring efficient workflows, and a well-organized, functional workspaces. 
  • Manage procurement of laboratory supplies, reagents, chemicals, and equipment; maintain vendor relationships and negotiate pricing to support budget efficiency. 
  • Implement and maintain inventory management systems for reagents, consumables, and chemical stocks. 
  • Coordinate instrument maintenance, calibration, and repair; serve as primary point of contact for equipment vendors and service providers. 
  • Manage shared lab spaces and common equipment scheduling. 
  • Management of office operations including stocking the kitchen and coordinating our lunch program 

Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) 

  • Serve as the primary internal EH&S coordinator, working closely with an external EH&S consultant to ensure full regulatory compliance across all lab operations. 
  • Maintain the Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP), Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and chemical inventory. 
  • Coordinate hazardous waste management and disposal. 
  • Conduct routine safety inspections; proactively identify and remediate hazards before they become issues. 

Research & Scientific Contribution 

  • Conduct independent benchwork to support drug discovery programs, including cell-based and biochemical assays, compound handling, and sample preparation. 
  • Assist in the design and execution of experiments under the guidance of senior scientists and project leads. 
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and well-organized electronic lab notebook (ELN) records for all experimental work. 
  • Contribute to data analysis, interpretation, and presentation in team meetings. 
  • Support method development and assay troubleshooting. 

 

You’re a good fit if you have (required) 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in biology, biochemistry, or a related life science discipline. 
  • 4+ years of laboratory experience in a drug discovery, biotech, or pharmaceutical setting, with at least 1 year in a lab management or operations-focused role. 
  • Demonstrated hands-on proficiency in biological laboratory techniques relevant to small molecule drug discovery. 
  • Experience with EH&S responsibilities including chemical hygiene, hazardous waste management, and OSHA compliance in a research laboratory setting. 
  • Excellent organizational skills with experience managing reagent and chemical inventories, equipment logs, and procurement workflows. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse team of scientists across biology and chemistry disciplines. 
  • Startup-ready mindset: self-directed, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, resource-constrained environment. 

 

Bonus Points For 

  • Familiarity with LIMS, ELN, and inventory management platforms (e.g., CDD) 
  • Background in biochemical and/or cell-based assay support (e.g., high-content imaging, HTRF, ELISA, cell viability). 
  • Experience helping to set up or scale a laboratory at an early-stage company. 

 

Location & Logistics

  • This role will be located at Redwood LIFE in Redwood City, CA, a modern and stunning life sciences complex in the Bay Area. 
  • Start date: immediate.
